Riding tests for officers in the United States army a'e being' held during the present season, and in consequence the war department at Washington is re ceiving a number of resignations from favored but fat leaders in numerous regiments. It is no child play, riding 90 miles or hiking 30 miles in a day, and that is the requirement of the army regulations instituted by the athletic Roosevelt six years ago. General R. K. Evans, commander of the Department of the Gulf, said that he has not taken the test this year, but that he has until next. June in which to do it. As he rides daily and is not in clined to weight rather than ability, he will have no trouble in accomplishing the task. But not all officers are so fortunate, says Genetai Evans. "It weeded the incompetents and physically unfit out of the army in a great way when the test was put in effect.” he said. "Many of the higher officers, who had grown so fat or soft that they simply could not ride, simply' resigned, and every year resignations go in for the same reason. ‘T've known officers to start on the ride and resign in the middle of it. waiting for an automobile or train to take them back over the route just passed on horseback. They' discover that it is much better to be a whole man living at the club on three-quarter pay' than a physically tortured soldier split by a horse's back and shaken by gaits strange to them on full pay.” Six officers returned to Fort McPher son yesterday after completing a ride to Fort Oglethorpe and return. Newman waived examination and was bound over to superior court. New man was arrested on the same charge some time buck, but the warrant jagainst him was dismissed when he agreed to settle with Wesley. Accord ing to U esley, Newman failed to settle.
