Diseases of Chickens A subscriber wants to know what is the matter with his chickens. “Several of them have died, and upon examination l they would !>• ven poor, meat all blue, and it was almost impossible to cut it. The iuiios &s■’" 'W| i would be all shriveled up ami dark in color.’’ There are not enough symptoms given to arrive at. a definite conclusion. ; My Consumption causes similar conditions, with a sneezing noise similar to a cough, or in other words, representing the cough in the animal. with a wasting away of the flesh and general W running down of the system, although they may f’gjilE’g' A /A? be well fed. Sometimes it is caused by a con- ' tinned case oi' cold or roup, but most generally by roosting or being confined in damp, filthy quarters. In the first stages of the disease there is scarcely anything discernible, but* in the more 5- advanced stages there is a sort of a chirping cough and a wasting away of the tlesh. The .MX’&SKAL-I. disease is considered hereditary, and stock so affected should not be bred from, 1 hough a permanent cure seems effected. Treatment in advanced stages should lie by the short cut— “hatchet route.” I am inclined to believe, how ever. that the conditions prevail ing in our* subscriber's yards are caused by the ravages of mites or lice, or both, causing a general run-down condition and conse quent losing in flesh with the blue look .is described. Although these pests are much more numerous and generally troublesome dining the- hot summer months, yet they jtre often silently at work burrow ing into the very life of our very best fowls during colder weather while we stand thouglitle.-sly by, unaware of the damage that Js being done. They live more constantly upon the body of the fowl in cold weather titan in warm, on aecojint of the tva: <nth of the body, and they are constantly sucking the very life blood away through the feathers until, .is tile siijiseribei' says, they are but little more than’ skin and bones and the tlesh loses all Its natural appear ances and becomes very tough and flabby. This causes the lungs to be come shrunken and dark in color. The first part of the treatment is to got rid of the lice and mites by some good lice powder or liquid dip, then provide a good dust bath for them with Judge Marshall will he glad to answer in this department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry.
