The Georgian’s Poultry and Lave Stock Pags

WORKMEN RUSH

Gang of Laborers Busy at the
Auditorium-Armory. Getting
Ready for Exhibits.
A gang "f laborers, in the employ of
the Georgia Poultry association, took
over the Atlanta Auditorium-Attnory
yesterday and began the tank of pre
paring it for the coming Great Central
Poultry Show of the South, which
openr Monday at 1 o’clock
Sunday morning the erecting gnu
will give place to the cleaners and they'
1n turn to th, superintendent and hi<
force who.wilt begin the work of put

Stronc, Class: if Rids
It begins to appear et'rlain that the
showing < era! clrsst- this year
will b- best that the South has ever
known and the competition will be the
it a finest.
One class that seems likely to stand
out above all the rest is the Rhode
Island Reds. These birds occupy a
place unique in the poultry' world. They
ware originated, for one thing, as the
reault of haphazard outbreeding.
When they oace became known they
•wept the country and achieved a suc
«eae unknown to any other variety.
Those who bred them found |wo things
—that in utility they were second to
none in the world, but that it was a
matter of extreme difficulty, as a resu’t
of the manner of thei origin, to get
them to breed true to Standard.
For several years the Red class at
the Georgia Poultry association’s show
has been one of the best and the com
petition has been the keenest This
year there is more quality and a prom
lee of hotter competition than ever be
fore. Some idea of what may lie ex
pected can bi gathered from a hint
about the exhibitors. One of the best
known exhibitors is Barrett Phf-nizy, of
Athens He his entered thirteen birds
and they will be heard from. Mrs. P.
T. Callaway, of Washington, Ga., and
Mrs. Don Donald --on. "f East Point, will
both make strong showings of Reds.
,1. I. Hosford, of East Point, has en
tered several good birds, and so has
Payne's Poultry Pens. Dr. W. P.
Hardeman has entered a corking big
string of birds, which includes not only*
Reds, tut White Rocks and Wynn
dottes as well
Callahans Will Defend.
Possibly the most notable of the
Southern entries is that of Callahan &
Son, of East Point. This firm won the
handsome Tumlln Brothers cup last I
year for the best pen of Reds, and as
this is a challenge trophy they will at
tempt to defend it this year. The Cal
lahan birds are said to be extra fine,
but they are bound to find the competi
tion tremendous. Another entrant who
can always be counted on to win prizes
is T. W. Martin, of Decatur His birds
should be In exceptionally fine condi
tion for the forthcoming show x
Mrs. A. 1. Matthews, of Redan, will
♦how Single Comb Rede, and so will
the Greeentha Poultry Yards, of At
lanta. and Frank a Doughman, of De
catur. Dr. J A Wright, who has some
strong Reda this year, is an entrant and
should do well, even against torrid
competition
Altogether, the showing of Reds at
the forthcoming exhibit should be an
excellent one and any tflrds that win
there will be able to win anywhere in
the South.
Reds Have No Monopoly.
The Red exhibit and the Orpington
showing are destined to be the most
notable this year, as has been the case
for recent years, but they* will not hold
any monopoly. The Rocks are excel
lently represented as usual, and the go
ing in the Barred and White divisions
will be lumpy' for anything but the
highest class birds. The Wyandottes
are strongly represented as usual, and
so are the Leghorns.
COLUMBUS POULTRY SHOW.
UOLUMBUS. GA.. Oct. 26.—The Co
lumbus Poultry association will hold its
annual poultry show December 2 to 7, it
being one of the big attractions of the
Georgia-Alabama fair, which will be
held here November 27 to December 7.
Inclusive. We have secured the serv
ices of Judge F. J. Marshall, editor of
The Georgian’s poultry department;
also Judge of Tennessee,
whom Judge Marshall was kind enough
to recommend to us.
While last year’s show was a great
success. we are endeavoring ia make
this year's show a still greater suc
cess, and from the number of inquiries
we are receiving for premium lists and
entry blanks, we will hav< ore of the
largest shows held in the South. The
fair association is now having con
structed a building GO by 12n feci, which
will be used entirely by the poultry
association, so you see we have plenty
of room to show at least 2.500 birds.
We will have our premium list ready
for mailing out on November 1. It will
b« one of the most attractive premium
lists issued by any poultry diow in the
state We will have a number of hand
some- silver cups, besides several cash
prize-. ranging from SSO down

I'he Augusta Poultry Show
Tlie eleventh annual exhibition of the
Augusta Poultry association will be
held in that city November 4 to 9. This
will be the representative show of the
South, as it has been so considered for
years
Last year over 3,000 head of poultry
was cooped, pigeons not counted This
«ns made up of the very cream of the
country-, both North and South. Man
age s of great Eastern poultry farms
were simply dumfounded at the ex
hibb they had run up against. They-
✓
had bi't‘ll informed that they would
nave to i impete with a high class of
bi ■!-. but they considered this to mean
a high rias.- for the South. Hence their
surj.'.ise when they ran up against
class after class that was the equal
of what they would find in Boston, New
York to Chicago Tip -e experience:!
exhibitors knew' a good thing when
they savt it, so were not surprised as
the awards went up to find them widely
scattered in many cas-s. It was a bat
tle royal between the giants of the
poultry kingdom of this country. The
leading hotel lobbies of the city were
alive during evenings with these lend
ing poultrymen discussing the various
phases of the poultry wo: k, breeding,
mating, exhibiting, etc. The notice
took it all in with open ears and mouth,
for it was a veritable bonanza for him.
The veteran officers worked like trained
guards in carrying out their experience
laid plans. Not a hitch or a bleak to
prevent the successful culmination of
one of the best poultry exhibitions ever
held in this country. The exhibitor
wit? his one pen of fowli was accorded
just as much consideration as the man
with a national reputation and scores
of fowls. All received their prize
money alike before tile elose of the
-how.
The same set of officers :hat eon
lueted last year's great show will man
age this year's exhibition. Practically
the same rules will be carried out. So
that there is every reason to believe
that last year's show will be duplicated

for the novice or the amateur and they
have been known to travel many miles
to visit this show, where they can lit

day and night. As Josh Billings would
say, the woods is full of tit. Better
plan to go and spend the week No
matter whether you are exhibiting or

many times over. One can not do jus

Practical Notes
A writer in an exchange says that he
has cured his hens of the egg-eating
habit by filling empty egg shells with
mustard and cayenne pepper aiij plac
ing them in the nests where the egg
eaters can get them. After tackling
one of these eggs they swear off for
ever.
The best way to handle the lice
question is tp keep them out. Once
they get into a poultry House they
make a determined fight before giving
it up. Whitewash, kerosene on the
perches and the free use of lice killer
pays. Th best time to use lice killer is
before the lice appear.
