Poultry Show Notes
Bv PERCY 11. WHITING.
The weather for the opening of this
year's poultry show has something on
that of last year. It will be recalled
ihat last year’s exhibit opened with a
howling ice storm in progress, the
streets so slick that birds could not be
elivered and the weather so bad that
nobody ventured out of doom who did
ot have to.
The rearrangement of coops so that
ill birds can be shown in the main Au
ditorium has proved a tremendous ad
vantage. It makes it more convenient
for the spectators and adds to the* at
tractiveness of the display.
By reason of the fact that there is no
crowding at the show there is space
enough between tHie rows of coops so
that light falls on all birds. This is an
especial advantage to breeders of per
fectly colored specimens as it shows
them off to the fulest advantage.
Judge Marshall will leave Atlanta to
morrow, after judging part of the local
show, to handle an exhibit at Pensa
cola.
The judge that gets the Orpington
class at the local show has his work
cut out for him. There is no question
at all but that the Orpington division
of the local show is the best ever
known in the South and has probably
never been exceeded in real class by
any shows except those of New York,
Chicago and Boston.
The idea of a futurity for chickens,
based on the lines of horse futurities
and cattle futurities, is threatening to
sweep the country. It was tried at the
Allentown show this year and made a
big hit. The idea, of course, is that I
various breeders enter birds and pay an I

sweepstakes. Two of the White Or
pingtons shown at the Atlanta show by
the Aldrich farm won futurities at Al
lentown and netted $l2O thereby, which
is some prize in the poultry show busi
ness!
With White Indian Runner ducks still
all the rage, the fact that the Georgia
Poultry association’s show numbers the
largest class of them ever exhibited in
poultry show history is a matter of in
terest to breeders. It is an admitted
fact that White Indian Runners were
the big money makers last season, and
they are in a fairway to repeat.
A coming breed that shows a big ad
vance over last year is the Partridge
Plymouth Rock. Last year there was
but a small showing. This year the
class is filled and the bitds are better
than ever.
One notable exhibitor of Partridge
Plymouth Rocks is William J. Stod
dard. The last time Mr. Stoddard
flashed before the Atlanta public, ex
cept in a business way, was as an au
tomobile driver. And he became known
as the bravest amateur that ever sat
behind steering wheel. His feats of
bringing the Fiat “60” of racing fame
over the wire at the local Speed way
with a broken steering rod and later of
running down a 30-foot embankment at
60 miles $n hour with the same car
are still fresh in the minds of local
newspaper readers. Now he has turned
his hand to more peaceful and less dan
gerous recreation and is succeeding
brilliantly as a breeder of chickens and
turkeys. His Partridge Plymouth Rocks
are almost sure winners at the coming
show.
Incubators.

NEXT WEEK at the big poultry show we
will show the new 1913 models. 60, 175,
250 and 350-egg capacity. Awarded gold
medal and highest honors at the Chicago
