Poultry -Show Notes
• By PERCY 11. WHITING.
The Briarcliff Farm's exhibit of Ban.
tarns at the Georgia Poultry associa
tion's show this week Is without ques
tion the most complete of these tiny
birds that one man ever made In the
South. Included in the list are the
following varieties: Golden and Silver
Seabright, Dark and Light Brahma,
Buff, Black, White and Partridge Coch
ins, Booted White, Silkies, White and
Black Japanese, Blacktailed White Jap
anese, Black-Breasted Red Game,
Brown Red Game, Birchen Game, Gol
den and Silver Duckwing, White, Black
and Red Pile Game, Rose-Comb White
and Rose-Comb Black, White Crested
Polish, and White Crested Polish
Bearded.
Those Bantams are one of the fea
tures of the exhibit, though to the lit
tle folks they are second in interest to
Mr. Candler’s pair of bears.
H. Konigsmark, of Smyrna, Ga., has
on exhibit a pen of Barred Plymouth
Rocks, which are not In competition.
Mr. Konigsmark has gone In particular
ly for the egg strain of Barred Rocks
but has some fine looking specimens
for all that.
The Bantamry, of Atlanta, owned by
Joe Brown Connally and John S. Mc-
Crelght, made Its usual killing with
Red Piles and Black-Breasted Red
Games. Mr. Connally has been breed
ing Bantams for fifteen or twenty years
and Is one of the leading Southern ex
perts.
The turkeys on exhibition In the
Georgia Poultry association show have
been making life miserable for the of
ficials. They were housed in most
substantial coops, but they Insist on
breaking their way out, and it is a dull
afternoon that does not find three or
four perched near the top of the build
ing. They have tom down partitions,
broken up coop tops and flown at will
for a couple of days. Had It not been
for the system of band numbers in use
the turkeys would now be so Inextric
ably mixed that their own owners could
never separate them.
‘‘Fine story, ’Asa G. Candler, Atlanta
Millionaire, Feeds His Pet Cranes with
Canary Birds,’ ” said Bill Stoddard, as
he stood outside the Briarcliff Farm
aviary v at the Auditorium and poked
fun through the wire netting at the
wealthy owner of the farm who was
having the time'of his life.
In order to make a nice showing in
his aviary, Mr. Candler ordered a lot of
canary birds. They did not reach At
lanta In time for the show, so he
bought a batch from a local dealer.
When he turned the first one loose there
were streaks of gray as two cranes
dived after it. A couple of seconds
later the canary was being gravely
crunched and torn by a crane. The sec
ond canary turned loose met the same
fate. Then Mr. Candler and his assist
ants got busy and spent the next half
hour catching the canaries and getting
them out of the dangerous place.
The Incubator and brooder exhibitors
are getting a lot of attention. They
have unusually fine showings this year.
Webster Sharp, of Decatur, did well
with his White Rocks. With five en
tries he won second and third pullet,
Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department
questions on all points of rearing utility and ftfncy poultry.
He ean not undertake, however, to reply personally to such let
ters of inquiry. Address Judge F. J. Marshall, College Park, Ga.

and fourth and fifth cock. He met
tremendous competition in that class,
which Is always one of the best In the
local show.
Hal Riviere, of Kirkwood, who is
showing some excellent Black Orping
tons, has one cockerel, eight months
old, which weighs 10 1-4 pounds. He is
a stunning bird in shape and color
and a veritable wonder for size.
Mrs. J. M. Hart, of College Park, has
an exceptional exhibit. She is showing
seven varieties of Wyandottes and three
varieties of Orpingtons, ten in all.
AV. J. Barnes, an Atlanta breeder of
Buff Plymouth Rocks, took second and
third pullet prizes with a pair of ex
ceptionally fine birds.
The Cornish Indian Games are at
tracting a lot of attention at the local
show and none have come in for more
favorable comment from the spectators
than those of H. G. Hubbard, R. F. D.
No. 5, Atlanta. He has some excep
tionally fine stock.
• B. F. Hart, of College Park, has one
of the largest exhibits at the local show,
with 40 White Leghorns. These birds
were winners at Atlanta, Macon and
Memphis last year.
J. H. Kimberly, of Ben Hill, Ga., is
making bls first show with one pullet,
one hen and one pen of first-class
White Leghorns.
M, F. Morris, of Atlanta, was a strong
winner, as usual, with White Wyan
dottes. He took first and fourth cock,
first and fourth cockerel, and fourth
hen.
J. F. Rhodes, of the Rhodes Poultry
Farm of Athens, has been at the show
this week. He believes the local ex
hibition Is one of the strongest he has
ever seen. He Is boosting hard for the
Athens show, which is slated for De
cember 3, 4 and 5.
Many feminine exhibitors did fine
work in the local show. Mrs. L. L. Up
son, of Athens, won prizes in all three
varieties she entered, and it was in the
torrid Orpington class, where the com
petition was of the million dollar va
riety. Mrs. Upson entered pens of Buff
and Whites and both were placed in
competition with eleven pens.
Mrs. L. F. McClelland, of Stone Moun
tain. was another winner with White
Wyandottes. Her hen that won first
was a wonder.
W. P. Barnes, of Griffin, was a good
winner in Barred Plymouth Rocks, with
first hen and first pullet, as well as
third and fifth cockerel.
Bruce and Abbott, of Whiteland, Ind.,
who entered only Buff Orpingtons, made
good winnings. They will take away
prizes for first and second hen, first
cockerel, third pullet and fifth pen.
The winnings of B. F. Hart, of Col
lege Park, with White Leghorns, were
first, second, third, fourth and fifth
cock, third, fourth and fifth hen, first,
second, third and fourth cockerel, first,
second and fourth pullet, and second
and fifth pen.
