guests received in the drawing room,
and luncheon was served at handsomely
appointed tables, in the dining room,
library and sun parlor. The two larger
tables had as central decorations large
rustle bask, ts tilled with fruits, v Ith
clusters of grain tied on the handle.
Four smaller baskets, similarly adorn
ed. were at the corners of tin table,
and at each plate were individual bon
bon holders in the form of witches' pots.
'*The score cards bore appropriate Hal
loween suggestions, and from the chan
deliers were suspended garjands of au
tumn leaves. Hanging baskets were
filled with greenery, with autumn
'eaves and Jack o' Lanterns gleaming
among the foliage. Silver candlesticks
wore tipp'd with yellow shades, sur
mounted by miniature .Jack o’ Han
terns. find In every detail was typified
the season of plenty and the witchery
of Halloween, each of the smaller tables
being beautifully,decorated.
Mis. Orr was gowned in taupe colored
brocade satin, bordered in fur. Miss
Orr wore lavender brocade crepe de
chine. Miss Brown wore black and
white satin with a black hat adorned
with plumes
Mi s. Lee Jordan assisted in entertain
ing.
Halloween Dinner Dance.
The Halloween ball at the Piedmont
Driving club this evening will be at
tended by 275 guests. Among the larg
er parties arranged are those to be
given by Mr. and Mrs, William A.
Speer in honor of Miss Elizabeth Raw
son. and by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Pap
penheimer. in honor of their young
daughter. Miss Marie Pappenheimer.
A party will include Mr. and Mrs.
James H. Nunnally. Mr. and Mrs. Mil
ton Dargan. Mr. and Mrs. George Dex
ter, .Mr and Mrs. Edward <'. Peters,
Mr. and Mrs. J. Erank Metidor, Mr.
nnd Mrs. i'lric Atkinson, and Mr. and
Mrs. C. A. Wood, of New York.
Mr. and Mis Hugh Richardson will
entertain ten guests. Another party

FUTURE EVENTS
A subscription dance will be given at
the Brookhaven club Saturday evening-
Mrs. Erank Hawkins and Miss Mar
garet Hawkins have issued invitations
’ for a reception on Wednesday after
noon, November 6, from 4 to 6 o’clock,
at the Piedmont Driving club.
Mrs George C. Walters has issued
invitations to the afternoon tea which
she gives Friday of next week, at the
Piedmont Driving club, in honor of Mrs.
Robert Winship Woodruff, formerly
Miss Nell Hodgson, of Athens.
The members of the Joseph Haber
sham Chapter. D. A. R.. will entertain
at a subscription dance at the old Cap
ital city club next Tuesday evening.
The members of the chapter w ill act as
chaperons.
Mrs. Carry! Bryan will entertain ala
bridge party of four tables at the Pied
mont Driving club on Monday after
noon, November 11.
Miss Annie Lee McKenzie will enter
tain next month in honor of Mrs. Rob
ert Winship Woodruff, who was Miss
Nell Hodgson, of Athens, before her
recent marriage, and for Misses Rose
Briscoe, of Knoxville, and Martine Mc-
Cullough, of tiWensboro. Ky., who will
he the guests of Miss Helen Dargan,
and will receive with Miss Dargan at
her debut cotillion.
HALLOWEEN BALL.
The third annual ball of the Sociable
Socialists of Atlanta will be held at
their hall, 117 1-2 Whitehall street, to
night.
SOLDIERS OF 17TH TO
GIVE A FULL DRESS
BALL IN POST “GYM”
A full dress military ball will be held
tomorrow night at Fort McPherson.
The members of the Regimental Social
club, which is an organization among the
enlisted men of the Seventeenth United (
States infantry, has made elaborate prep
arations.
The regimental colors will be placed in
the center oj the receiving line under an
escort, and refreshments will be served
from a booth in an alcove adjoining the
ball room.
On the night of November 15 a large
fancy dress ball will be given by the club 1
and there will be a prize for unique cos
tumes.
These dances are under the direct su
pervision of the chaplain of the regiment.
The music is furnished by the Seven
teenth United States infantry band.
FEDERAL PRISON GUARD
BEGINS CONVICT TERM
John T Vance, the Federal . prison
guard who was convicted of manslaugh
ter and given ten years for the slaying
of M. L. Connor, a fellow guard, todav
began serving his term, having decided
to make no appeal to the higher courts.
Vance will do time on the Triads of this
county, being transferred from the Tow
er to the Fulton county convict camps.

ATHENS. GA.. Oct, 31.—The bust- I
ness session of the United Daughters j
of the ConWderacy convention this
morning was taken up mostly with re
ports front the state chapters and the
reports of several memorial committees.
At 1:30 o’clock this afternoon the
Athens Woman's chib was hostess at
another informal luncheon, after which
I another business session convened at
2:30 o’clock.
I I One of the most brilliant social
events of the entire session will be the
reception this evening given by the lo
cal chapter of Daughters of the Amer
ican Revolution, at Mrs. Frances Long
Taylor's home. Mrs. W. M. Welch en
tertained the visitors'at a brilliant re
ception last night.
One of the delegates. Mrs. Ramsey,
of Elbprton. received a painful injury
this morning by tailing down stairs at
the home of her hostess. She sprained
an ankle.
