Latest Foreign Case Fad Inflicts Itself Upon New York
PUBLIC BAR FOR WOMEN OPEN

High Chairs Furnished for
Patrons Instead of Usual
Foot Rail.
NEW YORK, Oct. 31.—The fair ones,
whose systems demand a cocktail,
whoso, palates crave a maraschino or a
chartreuse, need not now await an
invitation from any man to sip those
delectable liquors.
A bar has been dedicated to them;
a "Ladies’ Bar” is now open in the Case
des Beaux Arts, the first of its kind
in New York.
It is in a corner of what is known
as the Marble room, but Louis Busta
noby said it would be called the "Pa
risian Case and Ladies' Bar” hereafter.
It was suggested to him that "The Bath
of Venus” would be a poetic and appro
priate name, bitt Bustanobv did not
seem to think so.
Os More Than Usual Height.
Tlie bar is L-sliaped and made of
mission wood, perhaps to lend a sub
dued tone. It is so high that from tlie
front only the heads and shoulders of
the two white-clad bartenders are vis
ible above it.
Behind the bar are cabinets and
shelves filled with bottles, decanters
and vase-shaped vessels, whose pol
ished surfaces, bright labels and glit
tering contents are designed to pro
voke thirst.
But, much more interesting—in front
of the bar is no vulgar round brass
rail, such as a man rests one foot on
while he discusses highballs and poli
tics. Instead, there is a broad, flat rail
And ranged before tlie bar are very
tall chairs, luxuriously upholstered in
soft plush.
Attitude of the Patrons.
The patron who seeks this oasis dain
tily steps on the broad, flat rail, grace
fully sinks in one of the chairs and re
marks invitingly to her companion:
"What’ll you have, my dear?”
A man is permitted to drink at the
bar. but not by himself; he must be
“escorted” by a woman. Learning this,
one of the patrons reproved Bustanoby.
"Why not devote the place to women
exclusively, and let the men take a
back seat for once?”
There are back seats in tlie Parisian
case—at tables.
Many women regale themselves at
the bar and seem to enjoy themselves
very much, indeed.
"Such bars have become fashionable
in London, Paris and Berlin." said Bus
tanoby. « “YVhy should New York not
have one?”

FEARED TWO MISSING
BALLOONS IN BIG AIR
RACE FELL INTO SEA
STUTTGART, GERMANY, Oct. 31.
Alarm is felt for the occupants of the
two missing balloons, Dusseldorf 11, pi
lated by Americans, and lie De France,
of France, which started last Sunday
afternoon in the international race for
the James Gordon Bennett cup and
which are still unreported. It is not
| believed that they are still afloat. It is
feared that they may have landed in
a desolate tract on the Russian fron
tier or may have been caught by a
stray wind and carried out over the
Baltic sea.
Tlie lie De France is an official entry
in the race, but the Dusseldorf 11, which
was loaned to the Americans after the
balloon Kansas City II exploded, is an
unofficial starter, and even should it
win the result will not be credited.
John Watts, of Kansas City, Mo., is
pilot of the -Dusseldorf 11.

Atlanta, Ga., October sth, 1912.
Dr. L. A. Hines,
Care Hines Optical Company.
Dear Doctor:
It gives me great pleasure to say
that the glasses fitted by you to my
eyes are most satisfactory.
I had little hopes when I went to
you, of getting glasses that would
give me relief as well as good vision,
as I have spent so much with the
leading oculists of this and other cit
ies without results, that I was dis
couraged.
Your glasses have given me the
sight of my childhood and I want to
thank you.
Very truly yours.
