I.—Macon’s re stricted district was today moved into a new section, away from any part of the city’s business or residential com munities. The district is now bounded on one side by the swamp known as the city reserve, on another by railroad switching yards, on a third by the river, and on the fourth by open fields. Near ly 30 houses within the heart of the city were closed up and abandoned. The chief of police, under the di rection of the police committee of coun cil, has undertaken to regulate the vice district, rather than abolish it. The ma jority of the houses closed up are in the heart of the city, and their owners are vigorously protesting against the action of the police committee. It is stated that many of the women will leave the city. NEGRO PUGILIST TO QUIT CHICAGO; SELLS SALOON CHICAGO, Nov. As the enlargement of our central store was impossible on account of the size of the building, we have met the situation by “spreading out.” We have purchased the Grand Pharmacy, selecting it as a business of established character and thriving growth consistent with the service we have always rendered our pat rons. Air. Watson retires from business, and our new branch (in the Grand building), remains under the direction of Mr. John Pickard, who has for eight years been actively in charge there, and who now comes into this firm as a stockholder.” W. " > ij Barr’s Saturday Candy EXPIHES ON DAY FIXED IN DREffl COLUMBUS, GA., Nov. 1.---Two nights before he died, George F. Barr, a mail carrier of Columbus, dreamed that he would pass away on the night that he died, and. according to the story re lated by him to members of his family the day following the dream, it was re vealed to him the names of his pall bearers, all of whom were his personal friends. Barr was 52 years of age and held in high esteem by all who knew him. The revelation brought to him by his dream caused him considerable worry. On the night he was stricken with paralysis, which caused his death, he sat up late and had only retired a few minutes be fore the stroke came upon him. He never regained consciousness from the moment he was stricken. He was buried today. “I wish to announce that I have be- H come associated with the Elkin Drug Company, they having pur chased Mr. Watson’s interest in the Grand Pharmacy. I feel that with the augmented facilities of the lar ger business, I can serve my friends and their interests better than ever before, and solicit an active contin uance of their patronage of our new m firm, either with the main store or rag through the “Grand” branch as heretofore.” JOHN PICKARD. I.—That a petition signed by more than 100 women of this city will be sent to the court of appeals, requesting the allowance of his appeal for a new trial, was the cheering news received by Charles Becker at Sing Sing prison today. This information came in the form of an unsigned letter, which was delivered to the condemned slayer of Herman Ro senthal by Warden Kennedy. It was one of a batch of fifteen letters, all of which, after being read by the prison censor, were turned over to Becker. When Becker’s letters were taken to him this morning, the stamps were torn from the envelopes. He asked the cause, and it was explained to him that ever since Warden Kennedy had discovered that between the stamp and the envel ope was a favorite place for hiding mor phine sent to prisoners by friends on the outside, he has had all stamps torn off the incoming mall.
