So Many Different Breeds?
We heard a man ask this question not long ago: “What
good is there in so many different kinds of chickens.’ Each
breeder thinks he lias the best chicken on earth,
ami if he has, why not kill off all the others I
ami settle down and raise that kind? But how
natural it is that different persons should se
lect different breeds of fowls to supply their
wants and needs. It is just as natural as it is
that men should not all pick out the same
woman for a wife. We have different tastes,
and it takes a variety to meet the demands.
How natural it is for one who has bred Barred
Rocks for a long lime to think they are the
best ami most beautiful thoroughbred fowl on
the list. And when any one asks his opinion
of which is the best fowl for a beginner to take
up, he will from force of habit say. “Why. you
need the Barred Rocks.'’
This thing often occurs. Before the man has
time to think about a prospective Imver as the
result of his advice, he lias grown so accustomed to tins breed
that he has learned to admire it. ever so much more than lie did
when ho invested his money in
the first pair. He Ims spent so
much time ami attention on them
that In- watches the improvement
in them with great satisfaction.
For exuniph. lie has been annoyed
over a certain defect in color of wings
or tail or shape of back, and it is with
tile greatest interest that lie notes the
Improvement In these sections year by
yeai. At first he only gets a few that
are good in these points. The next sea
son he gets a few more to suit him, and
so on. Then he turns his attention ’to
other sections that need improvement.
Il i- this careful work that lie has done
with his special breed that causes him
to become so much attached to it.
While a fancier of a single breed can
not realty sec the attractiveness of
other breeds, yet be Is naturally a lover
of all good stock and he sees how un
reasonable it is for him to assume or
think that lie is breeding the only good
chicken on earth. The Buff Rock man
has his pet points that he talks about
and points to you with pride, and no
doubt justly, too.
He has watched the annoying patches
of white and black disappear from the
wings and tail, and the mealy appear
ance from tlie back.
The Black Minorca breeder has been
| win king so hard to get rid of that pur
ple barring through the plumage. He
has studied it so much that he can al-

most see purple barring on a Buff
Cochin. But lie can no see the beauty
llnes»of a Rhode Island Red. He s not
built that way. lie can be heard to
say: "I expect these are right good
Rhode Island Reds, and look nice to
any one who fancies them.” But Just
trot out a tip-top Minorca of good size,
with line head points, and of that beau
tiful bottle green color throughout, and
see how quickly he will commence to
whistle. We have touched just tile
right chord. Because we can see so
much in our favorite breed does not
argue that there are not others just as
good. It takes certain breeds to meet
the requirements of certain breeders,
and we should not be selfish. Let us be
liberal among these lines and give each
and every one a chance.
Each breed has some specific quali
ties that we should admire for it, that
perhaps other varieties have not. Let
us all pull together in this great poultry
field and see what great good we can
accomplish, each with his favorite
breed. Beginners should, in selecting
a breed, strive to ascertain which one
of the many breeds Is naturally best
adapted to their wants, for 1 believe a
success can be made in taking up al
most any one of the reliable breeds and
striving to excel with it.
Whatever you undertake, do not try
to keep 40 different breeds and make a
wholesale failure of the lot.
