W/iy So Many Different Breeds?
We heard a man ask this question not long ago; “What
good is there in so many different kinds of chickens?’’ Each
breeder thinks he has the best chicken on earth,
and if he has, why not kill off all the others
and settle down and raise that kind? But how
natural it is that different persons should se
lect different breeds of fowls to supply their
wants and needs. It is just as natural as it is
that men should not all pick out the same
woman for a wife. We have different tastes,
and it takes a variety to meet the demands.
How natural it is for one who has bred Barred
Rocks for a long time to think they are the
best and most beautiful thoroughbred fowl on
the list. And when any one asks his opinion
of which is the best fowl for a beginner to take
up, he will from force of habit say, “Why. you
need the Barred Rocks.”
This thing often occurs. Before the man has
time to think about a prospective buyer as the
result of his advice, he has grown so accustomed to this breed
that he has learned to admire it ever so much more than he did
when he invested his money in
the first pair. He has spent so
much time and attention on them
that he watches the improvement
in them with great satisfaction.
For example, he has been annoyed
over a certain defect in color of wings
or tail or shape of back, and it Is with
the greatest Interest that he notes the
improvement in these sections year by
year. At first he only gets a few that
are good in these points. The next sea
son he gets a few more to suit him, and
so on. Then he turns hfs attention to
other sections that need Improvement.
It is this careful work that he has done
with hfs special breed that causes him
to become so much attached to it.
While a fancier of a single breed can
not really see the attractiveness of
other breeds, yet he is naturally a lover
of all good stock and he sees how un
reasonable It Is for him to assume or
think that he is breeding the only good
chicken on earth. The Buff Rock man
has his pet points that he talks about
and points to you with pride, and no
doubt justly, too.
He has watched the annoying patches
of white and black disappear from the
wings and tail, and the mealy appear
ance from the back.
The Black Minorca breeder has been
working so hard to get rid of that pur
ple barring through the plumage. He
has studied it so much that he can al-

most see purple barring on a Buff
Cochin. But he can not see the beauty
lines of a Rhode Island Red. He is not
built that way. He can be heard to
say: “I expect these are tight good
Rhode Island Reds, and look nice to
any one who fancies them." But Just
trot out a tip-top Minorca of good size,
. with fine head points, and of that beau
tiful bottle green color throughout, and
see how quickly he will commence to
whistle. We have touched just the
right chord. Because we can see so
much in our favorite breed does not
argue that there are not others just as
■ good. It takes certain breeds to meet
1 the requirements of certain breeders,
and we should not be selfish. Let us he
! liberal among these lines and gjve each
’ and every one a chance.
Each breed has some specific quali
ties that we should admire for It, that
■ perhaps other varieties have not. Let
I us all pull together in this great poultry

accomplish, each with his favorite

a breed, strive to ascertain which one

1 striving to excel with it.
Whatever you undertake, do not try
