PLEASES LONDON
“He Will Command Confidence
of His People and World,”
Says Newspaper.

LONDON, Nov. 7. —Leading British
newspapers express their approval of the
election of Woodrow Wilson as the next
president of the United States.
"Wilson will command the confidence of
his own countrymen and the world out
side," said The Evening Standard. “He
is a public man of much higher type than
some who have occupied the white house
during the past 40 years. Nobody can ac
cuse him of belonging to the ranks of
professional politicians.”
The Pall Mall Gazette says:
"Wilson's election is the last hope of
his countrymen for the restoration of true
self-government by the aid of existing
party machinery. His mandate is to
break the power of bosses, of all forces
which have made legislation and govern
ment mere Implements for the attainment
of selfish ends. If he should fail In this
arduous commission the Democratic party
will go the way of its rivals and the whole
future of American politics may undergo
a deep startling transformtalon.
"Wilson's record so far bodes well for
the success of the experiment and his
enormous majority proves that the Ameri
can people think bls lack of a particular
kind of experience to be a positive vir
tue.”
PROMINENT CHINESE
TAKEN IN RAID ON DEN
PITTSBURG. Nov. 7. —Sam Kee,
leader of the On Leong tong, former
president of the Gee Gong tong or Chi
nese Freemasons of Pittsburg and
prominent in various Chinese societies
and enterprises, was the principal pris
oner captured last night in a raid, by
the police of an opium den in the Chi
nese quarter. •

T. Brown, of Atlanta; Tom Hardwick,
of Sandersville—or somebody else?
Every one of these men pulled off his
coat for Wilson, and fought his battles,
through all its ups and downs, never
tiring, never quitting, from the day his
boom was launched up to and including
yesterday, when the former Georgian’s
great ambition was consummated.
To them goes a heavy measure of
credit for Wilson’s big victory in Geor
gia. It is just that the record be thus
written.
They fought a good fight, and they
put it over.
Loyal Democrats, regardless of past
political or factional affiliations, rallied
to them, as they should have done—-but
they were the leaders and the uncom
promising generals in command.
One of the very first to wire his con
gratulations to President-elect Wilson
was Governor-elect Slaton, of Georgia.
When Slaton looked the Georgia re
turns over, he said: "By jove, that man
Wilson just about got my vote in Geor
gia—and that's some dandy. I'll have
to wire him at once—any man who gets
that vote is subject to congratulation!"
The governor-elect expressed himself
as delighted with the prospect not only
of a Democratic president, but of a
Democratic congress as well.
The statement published in an after
noon paper of Atlanta Tuesday, to the
effect that Governor Brown’s private
secretary, Jesse Perry, gave out with
out the governors knowledge or con
sent a letter to the governor from
James D. Price, which letter concerned
Mr. Price's demand upon the governor
for immediate commission to office as
commissioner of agriculture, is abso
lutely incorrect and does Mr. Perry a
great injustice.
The receipt of the letter was pub
lished in The Atlanta Georgian of Morr
day\ with the direct and positive con
sent of the governor himself. The gov
ernor, over the telephone, was informed
by a Georgian reporter that The Geor
gian was aware such a letter had been
addressed to the governor, and that the
knowledge of the letter came from out
side the executive office. Governor
Brown admitted the receipt of the let
ter, but said he would not discuss it. as
he had not read it thoroughly, and had
not read Judge Cobb's accompanying
opinion at all.
Secretary Perry had nothing to do
with giving out the letter for publica
tion—the governor himself gave out all
that anybody- gave out concerning it.
And the governor desires it made plain
that such facts as were made public
concerning the Price letter, were so
made with the express knowledge and
consent of the governor.
For a time it looked as if Taft would
get a little bit of a look in on the Geor
gia election returns Thursday night.
Along about 9 o'clock a wire from
grand old Pickens announced that that
bailiwick had mounted the Taft wagon
—and as the w agon was crowded not at
all. the bulletin attracted no little at
tention.
Finally, however, Pickens wabbled off
the Taft wagon, and fell to T. R, which
left Taft's Georgia score exactly and
precisely 0!
The combined Republican vote in
Georgia did not go as high this year as
it did in 1908, when Taft was pitted
against Bryan. Indeed, in that election
Taft carried two congressional districts.
A sure sign that Democracy is trium
phant after ancient and approved
Southern fashion is the appearance of
the victorious rooster at the mastheads
and across the front pages nowadays
of divers and sundry esteemed contem
poraries around and about.
True, these roosters are of the vin
tage of 'B4 mostly, when G’over Cleve
land was first elected president, and
some of them look mighty queer in
the columns of a modern newspaper.
Nevertheless, they serve a noble pur
pose today, and they carry a meaning
that is all to the good in Democratic
philosophy.
Besides, while they may be old, they
never have been overworked, and they
print up fine and dandy!

ing the secretary of war, in his discre
tion, to deliver to certain cities and
towns condemned bronze or brass can
non. with their carriages and outfit of
cannon balls, etc. Practically all of the
cities and towns named in the bill were
situated either in the North or in the
West. The measure passed the house,
and when it came up for passage in the
senate Senator Bacon offered the fol
lowing amendment to the bill, which
was adopted:
"To the city of Atlanta, Ga„ for the
adornment of the state capitol grounds
in that city, four condemned bronze or
brass cannon or field pieces, with their
carriages, and with a suitable outfit of
cannon balls for each.”
Senator Bacon has just been in
formed by the secretary of war that the
aforesaid cannon are now ready for
shipment, subject to his directions. The
eenator will communicate with the
proper city authorities in Atlanta in
regard to the transportation and locat
ing of the cannon.
A cannon probably will be placed at
each of the four comers of the capitol
ano by each cannon will be piled in
pyramids about twenty cannon balls.
