TRIAL FOR LIVES
Men Accused of Actual Killing
of Herman Rosenthal Will
Take Witness Stand.
YORK, Nov. B.— The trial of
. ' nII ven accused of the actual as-
of Herman Rosenthal, for
'whose murder Charles
.. , x-lieutenant of police. Is now
‘.F, :, F j- jth sentence, was called before
‘J. . .. Goff in the supreme court to-
B, deving that their best chance
'.fF-svaping death lay in a group trial,
. four defendants had decided
F Fains; separate trials and District At
'(’Ji'nej Whitman had announced that
\ had no objection to such a plan.
Vuorney Wahte, chief counsel for
Har-y Horowitz, alias 'Gyp the Blood;”
louis Rosenberg, alias "Lefty Louie;”
Erank Muller, alias "Whitey Lewis,”
Frankie Ciroflci, alias “Dago
Frank -aid that he expected a jury
w ould be secured before night.
W< art not afraid of any particu
lar kind of a jury,” he said, "but want
the b-’-.-t we can get.”
Tin gunmen make up the youngest
group of defendants ever held on trial
for thei" lives in this city. The com
bined ago of the four is only 94, an av
erage of 24.
All four of the gunmen will take the
stand as witnesses for themselves and
each other. The state has called 25
witnesses. It is stated that the four
,nen insisted .upon testifying in their
own behalf after watching the result of
•he Becker trial, where they concluded
that the policeman lost his chance by
not testifying.
Just before court convened there
came a report from the West Side pris
on that Louis (Bridgle) Webber was
pretending insanity.
Webber, who is one of the chief wit
rj. ss- s against the gunmen, is in des
,rr,n fear of the prisoners and dreads
t >-• ordeal of testifying against them.
I’nder this fear he has been for a week,
his keepers intimate, putting himself
through crazy exercises and feigning
< insanity.
Ten Days For Trial.
It is estimated that the Jrlal of
the tour young professional killers will
take less than ten days. As in the
Becker trial. Justice Goff, at the begin
ning. made it evident that he desired
the greatest dispatch.
Bald Jack” Rose, Webber, Harry
V Ton and Sam Schepps are expected
be r leased immediately after the
gunmen's trial is over. Their liberty
'•omes as their reward for turning
state's evidence against Becker.

May. A widow and two sisters survive
him.
General Lea was a graduate of Los
