FOUR GUNMEN DN TRIAL FOR LIVES Men Accused of Actual Killing of Herman Rosenthal Will Take Witness Stand. YORK, Nov. B.—The trial of gunmen accused of the actual as avassiiMtion of Herman Rosenthal, for • ’gating whose murder Charles j, lxf ex-lieutenant of police, is now ■ death sentence, was called before Goff in the supreme court to ll. Having that their best chance ,f escaping death lay in a group trial, • > four defendants had decided against separate trials and District At torney Whitman had announced that he had no objection to such a plan. Attorney Wahte, chief counsel for Harrv Horowitz, alias “Gyp the Blood;” Louis Rosenberg, alias "Lefty Louie;” frank Muller, alias “Whitey Lewis,” an d Frankie Clroflci, alias “Dago Frank.' said that he expected a jury would be secured before night. ■ We are not afraid of any particu lar kind of a jury,” he said, “but want the best we can get.” The gunmen make up the youngest group of defendants ever held on trial for their lives in this city. The com bined age of the four is only 94, an av erage of -4. All four of the gunmen will take the stand as witnesses for themselves and each other. The state has called 25 witnesses. It is stated that the four nen insisted upon testifying in their own behalf after watching the result of the Becker trial, where they concluded that the policeman lost his chance by not testifying. Just before court convened there came a report from the West Side pris on that Louis (Bridgie) AVebber was pretending insanity. Webber, who is one of the chief wit nesses against the gunmen, is in des- ■ r; t>- fear of the prisoners and dreads •ir ordeal of testifying against them. I’nder this fear he has been for a week, -o his keeper# intimate, putting himself through crazy exercises and feigning insanity. Ten Days For Trial. It is estimated that the trial of the four young professional killers will til; less than ten days. As in the Becker trial, Justice Goff, at the begin ning, made it evident that he desired the greatest dispatch. • Bald Jack” Rose, Webber, Harry \ lon and Sam Schepps are expected ■ > be released Immediately after the gunmen’s trial is over. Their liberty omes as their reward for turning state’, evidence against Becker. SAN FRANCISCO PUTS BAN ON BILLBOARDS .'AX I • HANCISCO, Nov.
