The fact of the * xisu-nc. of so many such exhibitions Indicate- that they must exert some sort of influence, unless mankind is to be indicted by th< wholesale for inexcusable folly, Tin v occupy the time of hundreds and thou sands of people and demand the expen diture of large sums of money. W n.'H then 1s the nature of their influence, and upon whom or what exerted, to warrant such an expenditure of ti ne, labor and cash? The primary influence of the poultrs' exhibition is educational: the second- In its educational aspect this influ ence teaches what has been done and is ary social; and the tertiary stimulative, doing in relation to poultr? breeding. Ry the kindergarten method it reveals the progress made and making in the development of the domestic fowl. It shows, in most attractive and convinc ing manner, how from one smull species of a definite type and color hare been developed breeds and varieties, rang ing in weight from approximately fif teen ounces to fifteen pounds, how types have been varied from the glob ular form of the modern Cochin to the, stocklike conformation of tin Exhibi tion Game; how combs have t tin the gamut of single, pea, rose, leaf, nub, strawberry and other types: how crests and beards have developed upon clean heads; how colors ’have tanged from black to white, through various hues and shades; how markings have be come complex and complicated and in clude bars, crescents, spangles and pen ciling?: how beauts and utility have developed in various directions; how adaptability for diverse purposes have become fixed and perpetual: indeed, how in a thousand differing ways the wild gallus has assumed more shapes than Proteus of old. And to these changes are added those which have been modem descendants: in the Mal lard duck through the moderate breeds, and in the turkey and guinea fowl It further shows the growing improve ments in the appliances for modern poultry keeping, tn Incubators and brooders, houses, yards and fencing, water fountains and food hoppers. It exhibits more or less completely what has been , done in preparing special foods, vermin destroyers and the like. And it even gives glimpses of the men tal activity exhibited by publishers of poultry books and journals. The edu cational influence is many sided and of ilverse character In its social aspect this influence is exhibited by bringing together many men having a common purpose, the improvement of poultry breeding, to meet with each other and discuss the questions which interest them. It re quires no argument to prove that a common interest results In pleasant so cial r< lations, and that these relations iften become firm and enduring friend ships. In Its stimulative aspect its influence results in the improvement of fowls. The prizes offered for competition, the friendly rivalry which such competition engenders, the value of winning in pro moting future business, all these things give zest to further efforts, and each exhibitor, whether successful or unsuc cessful, firmly resolves to produce still bet’er fowls during the coming breed ing season These resolves are never useless; generally they are fruitful in rreater successes in breeding. The Influence of the poultry show is exerted upon the public. They come, they see and they are conquered. .Many of them take up the breeding of poul try through the influence of the exhibi tion. The Influence is exerted upon the breeders themselves who learn much and receive coinage and Incite ment to renewed and more zealous ef forts. And the influence is, also, ex erted upon the fowls themselves, be cause the encouragement and stimula tion of the shows result in more thor ough and careful bleeding. All classes who attend, as Well as the fowls, are subjected to an influence w Inch means more and better poultry in the future, and the time, labor and money e\- pended in conducting poultry exhibi tions aie returned many times over to the community in the increased quan tity ami improt ‘d quality of the prod - acts of tlie poultry yard. How many fowls did yon have at YOl'R show.' It is not. what was the quality of your exhibition.' as it should have been. Os course a reasonable sized exhibition is desirable in order to give the desired variety ami attractiveness to the show. Itnl is it not much more desir able lo pul on an exhibition of 1.500 fowls. 1.200 of which would be of a quality to score better limit 90 points? Such a show is an edu cation from start to finish. One can find the best birds the country products at such shows as Atlanta. Augusta. .Memphis. Xasliy ilie and Knoxville have been putting on. These asso ciations are settling down to the fact that qual ify is what is wanted and expected at an ex hibition of pure bred poultry. If it were sim ply numbers regardless of quality that was es sential, one could visit one of the great egg farms of our country where uli'ity is the watch word. When we attend a great concert and pa.y our good money for a seat, we expect to be tielighted with the harmony that will he produced. If it were simply a noise regardless of everything else we need only go to the woods where a flock of crows were going to roost. Ilarmonv is what we are look- ing for at the big poultry ex hibits, and as long as an asso ciation is putting forth all its energies toward securing the greatest aggregation ever gath ered together under one roof, quality must necessarily take a back seat. The farmer doe? not care to spend his time and money to attend the poul try show In the city if he is to find hut few better birds than he can find in his home town, on his own farm or that of his neighbor. He is looking'for top notch quality. And so with the expert local breeder. He is looking for rows of coops containing quality. If he does not find much of it, he is not slow in saying so; So I feel that out- associa tions. or many of them, are working I for the quality show, and are wise in so doing. But some one asks, What are you i going to do with the beginner or ama teur? He must necessarily get in his I work with the local associations of the smaller toyvns. He can go there to measure up with the few top-notchers to be found at such shows. There he will find company of tils own kind. There he can work from year to year until he outgrows his short pants and blouse waist, when he begins to stretch up and head for the city show. It should be something in the nature of a graded school. The lower grades, while just as essential in their places, do not represent the same degree of excel lence.
