Everything Is fuvotable tor trips to
Atlanta for this show. Ind any ear
owners, living within 250 miles of At
lanta, who come any other way are
overlooking one corking flue bet.
The Season Is Right.
In the first place, this is the season
for Southern touring in the summer
it is mighty hot. it isn't so bad when
the cars are moving, but the stops are
hot, and if any night stops are made
they are likely to be uncomfortable
ones, except for those fortunate folks
■who can bleak the jump with a night
stop in some big city, when good hotel
accommod; tiolis can be emmied mi. <>n
the other hand, winter touring Is un
certain. If tin weathei is tim it is i
delight. If cold rains set in it is a mis
erable pastime at best- and sometimes
all but impossible.
In the fall, however, touring condi
tion- in Dixie are ideal. The roads,
aft' i tie dry siimnn r and the mod, rate
ruin.- of the fall, are in the main ex

have washed more er less. But there
drive been n > ecent rains of sufficient
severity to make the going bad. The
weather is likely to be ideal. Mid-No

a most pleasing temperature.

Avoid "Big Tours."
There xvas much talk a while back of
organized tour.- from various points to
Atlanta. And it sounded tine. But for
tunately the plan has been given up.
And in the place of these "tours" will
be a thousand informal runs, one car to
the hour, with no schedule, no checking
in, no checking out. no sit rub-, and
nothing but a pleasant run to the
pleasantest city of all the globe.
Regular "tours" arc tine, in their way
—Gliddens, New Yolk-to-Atlanta*. and
such. They test curs -but they test the
patience, the endurance and the dispo
sitions of the contestants to the limit
And nobody ever went on such a
formal tour and enjoyed it. They aren't
designed for | ieasure. You turn out at
some Unearthly hour, grab breakfast
along with a eoiiph of hundred hungry
tourists, waft around it half hour to
check out. run all day through the
blinding dust kicked up by others in
the tour, tuk' tic ditch u dozen times
an hour to pass the laggatd- g" Into it

for safety an equal number of times, to
get out of the way of the speed de
mons. check In tired and worn at night.
! find yourself assigned to a hotel you
wouldn't send y our dog io, because the
tour olth ittls had grabbed off tin good
hotels for themselves and their friends;
and then toss a- best you can through a
hard night, sleeping iu bed with a total
stranger, perhaps—and three or four
beds to the room!
Yes. v< i lly any man who goes on om
of thosi ’ rcgulnr” tours for pleasure is
burned to a eiisp. There is nothing
to it.
Every Car For Itself.
The wax' to travel across country in
an automobile is on a basis' of each ear
, foi Itself.
If you are coming to the show get up
a party just big enough to comfortably
till you ear. Don't overcrowd.. Leave
plenty of room for luggage. Don’t fix
any sclu dole Don't be too particular
about a route Just pack up. start some
morning with the radiator pointed to
ward Atianta. Plug along, at a moder
ate speed, until you get there, or until
night falls. Put up at the first decent
hotel y m see and start at a comfo. table
houi the next morning for Atlanta.
Take it easy. That’s the way to get
comfort out of automobiling.
I ew preparations are necessary for a
trip of that sort. Bo sure you have a
little extra oil and gasoline tucked
away somewhere whole neither will
leak. They max come in handy. You
don't need much, for oil and "gas" can
be purchased almost anywhere these
days <if eoui's". provide yourself with
all that is needful in the way of tires.
What ym will need to carry will de-
' i' nd. of course, on the length of your
trip.
Don't litter up with a lot of tools and
icpair junk. All this Southeastern ter
ritory t- well supplied with automobile
repair shops
Send Baggage By Express.
Dui'l load the car down with a lot of
luggage. If you are to stay in Atlanta
fseveral days and need rial clothes
ship them ahead by express. They will
turn up in better ordei and they will
make It easier on your car.
II Is always safe enough to carry a
length or rope, and a ehovel isn't to be
- tied If you strike sand. Don't, by
any chance, forget a set of chains -and
l.av< them for all four wheels, it Is
easy to guard against a skid, but
. mighty hard to get out of a ditch once
you have slid in.
Plan to Keep Warm.
Another thing, carry plenty of heavy
• ' 'th' -, ap robes, foot warmers, gloves
and such They take up space and
they a’-' mightily in the way when it is
hot. but het ■ is nothing more miserable
than riding along with the cold winds

1 Hoxv to Get to Atlanta.
There are five main trunk lines into
1 Atlanta—-five routes that have been
scouted out, mapped and over which
road readings have been made. These
four come, approximately, from the I
north, south, west. northwest and east.
Roughly, the live routes are as fol
lows:
NORTH Extending from Atlanta. I
through Marietta and Cartersville to
Chattanooga. There it joins three oth
er trurik lines, one northwest to Nash
ville, another northeast to Knoxville
and Bristol and one southwest t » Deca
tur. Ala.
NORTHEAST This route is the sq
ealled National highway, it extends
through Anderson. Greenville. Charlotte
and Greensboro, up through Virginia. 1
. and on to New York.
EAST —This is the road to Augusta.
At Augusta it brunches, one branch
running to Macon, one to Savannah and
one- the so-called Capital to Capital
route to Camden. Pinehurst and thence
north through Raleigh, and Richmond j
to New York.
SoCTH —This is the continuation of
the National highway through Macon
to Jacksonville. At Macon a road in
tersects that extends from Augusta to
Montgomery, and taps southern Geor
gia and Alabama.
WEST This is a little known route
through Douglasville and Edwardsville
to Birmingham. At the Alabama me
tropolis this road intersects a north
south road from Chattanooga to Mont
gomery: and It also extends southwest
to the Mississippi river.
As to the Northern Route.
Two routes exist to Chattanooga. One
Is through Rome. The other runs al
most due north from Cartersville.
Either ought to bo fairly good in dry
weather. The road from Rome to At
lanta Is excellent. What it is the other
side of Rome we do not knoxx from
personal experience, and the road read
ings are silent on the subject, so tile
worst is to be feared.
The Route Through Rome.
In getting to Atlanta from Chatta
nooga byway of Rome the tourist
leaves Chattanooga byway of McCallie
avenue and on to Lafayette. Front
there only one town lies between the |
tourist and Rome, and that town is
Summerville. From Rome south the
roads are good in fair weather and the
tourist passes through Kingston, Car
tersville. Kennesaw. Marietta and At
lanta. This Is a much traveled road
and one any tourist can scout out w ith,
out trouble. A good tip is to follow
the main body of wires arid the main
line of telegraph poles.
The Alternative Route.
The other route from Chattanooga
tarries the tourist on Missionary Ridge,
past the cavalry post, across Reeds
bridge, and on to Ringgold From there
the route passes through Millicane
Tunnel Hill. Dalton, Resaea, Calhoun.
Adairsville, c sville and on to Car
tersville, from which point it it clear
sailing to Atlanta.

The route from Greenville as
mapped oat in the Blue Book leads
through < »ak Grove, Piedmont and An
derson. Lavonia. Bowersville. Canon.
Royston, Franklin Springs, Poeataligo,
Commerce, Jefferson, Winder. Law
renceville. Stone Mountain, Clarkston
Scottdale and 1 teeatur.
This, by tl'e wax. Is not the real na
tional highway , as used by the Glidden
tour of 1911. This route runs through
Anderson. Fairplay, across the Tugahi"
river at Knox I'aidge. through Lavonia,
Carnesville, Commerce Jefferson. Win
der. Auburn Station. Duluth. Pittman
Norei'bs, Doraville. Ciambli Station
and Buekhead to Atlanta. Either of
these routes is first class.
Augusta to Atlanta.

not very bad exceptions. The Worst
roads are between Greensboro and
Madison. The route runs through
Bomsvilie. Crawfordvi . I'nion Point,
Greensboro. Madison, Rutledge, Social
I Circle. Covington. Lithonia. Stone
Mountain and Decatur to Alabama.
Macon Route Familia".
The Macon route is so well known
that mention Is buroy necessary, it
extends from Macon through Lorane.
I'orsyth. Barnesville. Griffin. Jonesboro
to Atlanta.
From Valdosta north to Macon is a
tine strip of :oad. in parts the equal of
anything in Dixie. The cities passed
passed through after leaving Valdosta
are Hahira. Adel, Lenox. Tifton. Chula.
Cyeloneta. Sycamore. Ashburn. Worth.
Sibley. Vienna and Echeconnee to Ma
con.
Tough Going Toward West.
The route to Birmingham is not as
well known a- tin others and is pie
-umed t" be none too excellent. How
ever. it is constantly tsaversed and
should lie good enough provided tin I

From Further Points.
Touiists from the various states ad
joining Georgia will find first-class
roads to Atlanta From North Carolina I
the would-be visitors would naturally
take the national highway and would
find the going excellent. From South
Carolina there is a choice of routes—
the national highway and the road
down to Augusta and from there to At
ianta. Floridans who are coming to
the show will find two good routes
the national highway through Macon
and the route through Savannah. From.
Savannah, by the way, there are two
routes. One is through Augusta and
the other through Waynesboro and Mil
ledgeville, both good.

Beautiful spot along the Marietta road
mingham and thence east to Atlanta a
fairly good one. From Tennessee there
are several routes—through Decatur,
Ala., through Chattanooga, and south
to Birmingham, and then east.
All in all. there are ways enough and
good roads enough. And next week
and the week after will see thousands
and thousands of automobiles traveling
over them, headed for Atlanta.

One of the most important developments
of the annual conference of salesmen of
lhe Firestone Tire and Rubber Company
at Akron, Ohio, just concluded, was the
announcement of the perfection of a tire
which would reduce battery consumption
per mile by at least 12 per cent.
The conference, which was a most en
thusiastic one. brought out many points,
but from the standpoint of the electric
ear owner none was so important as this
one.
The new tire, xvhich is interchangeable
on pneumatic-rims, whether standard
clincher or quick detachable clincher, bin
fair to revolutionize the solid tire in
dustry. It is of the dual tread type and
extra resilient.
The makers claim for it (and ti e clai
have been proven by a large number ut
prominent electric ear builders) that the
unusual amount of resilence built into il"
tire is the secret.
It is a well known fact that the bear
Ing surface of a tire has much to do with
the amount' of electric current consume I
by the ear. Too little bearing surface. . n
the other hand, causes friction which will
retard the car, and waste electric current
by the resistance.
As shown by the Firestone Company,
and proven by electric ear manufacturer.-,
this new tire, by a scientific exactness of
resiliency and consequent bearing sur
face, avoids both pitfalls.
