The Finish of the Missouri Egg-Laying
Contest
The great Missouri laying contest which has been going on
for a year closed November 1 and revealed many interesting
I facts. (
A pen consisted of five females, either hens
ior pullets, or the two combined. The entries
eaiue from all parts of the I’nited Stales. Can
ada. and England. The experiments have been
conducted under the direct supervision of T. E.
Quisenberry. director of the Missouri State FouJ-
I try Experiment station, whom we personally
! know to be one of the most experienced poul
try breeders in this whole country.-in addition
to which he bears the reputation of being as
straight as a die in every move he makes,
which gives added weight to all his reports. The
leading pen in the contest was of Rose Comb
Rhode Island Reds with a record of 1,042 eggs,
or an average of over 208 eggs per hen.
The best individual record was made by Lady
Showyou. a White Plymouth Kock hen. which
laid 281 eggs in the twelve months. This hen
lacked but one egg of equaling the best record that has been
made known, that made by a Barred Kock hen at Guelph, Canada,
but Professor Graham asserts that the Canadian hen laid a very
small and thin-shelled egg, while
Lady Showyou laid a good, full
sized heavy-shelled egg, weigh
ing more than two ounces on the
average, so that the White Rock
lien is easily the champion.
Then were 655 hens in this contest,
laying u total of 87,843 eggs, an aver
age of 134 per hen. Considering the
fact that mote than a dozen of the hens
lacked two orsthree months of being
mature at the time the contest began,
and also considering the fact that more
than half of the pens were made up of
liens many of which were three or four
years old. it seems tliat the general
av« r:>g is pretty good, especially when
we consider that the average hen over
the country only lay.: 80 eggs i fir year.
The pens run as follows as to laying
records:

The above’ averages, of course, in
cluded good, bad and indifferent layers.
The amount ot food consumed on the
average is about 35 pounds of grain
and 34 pounds of mash per hen for the
year. The cost of the grain was about
11-3 cents per pound, and of the dry
mash nearly 2 cents per pound.
In comparing this contest with the
great Australian contest, just closed
also, it will be seen how far the Aus
tralian:: are in advance ot the breeders
of this country in egg production. The
leading pen in their pen averages 259
eggs per hen as against 208 in this con
test. In the total number of hens of 360
of the Australians gathered from 60 dif
ferent breeders, they made an average
of nearly 200 eggs per hen, as against
134 in this contest. We think much of
this difference in favor of the Austra
lians is due to the fact that they have
been conducting these experiments over
there for over ten years, and have work,
ed up the interest in Increased egg pro
duction. the very object sought for.
We hope to see more of thesq con
tests carried on in this country in
various sections, that breeders may be
enthused to pork for the prime object
of successful poultry culture. The
new contest of the Missouri state farm
will commence November 15, and con
sist of 700 hens, representing 20 varie
ties, and gathered from England, Cana
da and 20 of the I’nited States. There
will be 30 hens to each variety, besides
100 hens for tests of various modes of
feeding, etc.
