Make an hi vest merit and Make It Pay
We nre often asked the question. Can I make a small in
vestment in good poultry and feel sure that it will pay me!
I would sai that of course you can make such
proposition pay if yon will do your part right I
and well. In Ih> first place, you must invest in X Wh
good stock, and in doing so. you must be right |ii
liberal in buying such stock. Better buy live
I irds at ten dollars each, than ten at five dol- t’
its lai’li. providing, however, that you are ju- '
dicious enough in the trade to get the worth -
of your In fact, if I was sure of my
man ami his stock I should take my chances
on spending the fifty dollars upon a trio. I
think 1 would I* t the trio be yearlings at that. .
fowls that had passed through their moult, so I
that I could see what effect it had upon them. *
Os course, if' one ha<l plenty of spare cash I
might say invest more money in netting a
greater number of chickens, getting a start
quicker. But with a small amount I would P-J-bfAJR'SHA.TT.
certainly limit the number in order to increase the quality.
I would raise all the eArly birds 1 could from the trio, cull
ing the youngsters down very
closely after they become old
enough so that no mistakes would
be made in the selecting. In
fact, if I were not well posted
upon the breed I had commenced
to handle. 1 should call in some
one who was posted—-a neigh
bor or some expert—and have
them to help me make my selec
tions for the next season's breed
ing.
In fact, if some money were spent
foi expert adyiee, it would be money
well spent. In that way you would ob
viate tlie chances of losing a whole
year's work by fTTjudieious matings.
If at the end of the first year I did
not raise the breeding cockerels suited
to my stock for mating, I would sell
them and buy. if possible, something
that would mate in properly. It would
be my alm at all times to produce the
best. I would try mighty hard to make
the other fellow's eyes water after I
got. fairly .started. My aim would be
quality all the time in preference to
quantity. I would not try to hide
by light under a bushel. On the con
trary, 1 would do everything I could
to make the fact known that 1 was
breeding such stock, that 1 had stock
for sale and eggs in season. I would
do this in various ways. I would have
nice, attractive, labels to stick upon all
Rhode Island Reds.
MY WINNINGS at the recent Georgm
I’dultry association show is conclusive
of the high standard of my S. C. Reds. 1

I would do a lot of newspaper ad
vertising. I would do it carefully and
judiciously, however. I would spread
my money over a good deal of space.
In other words, I would use a great
many small ads in my endeavor to get
my name and stock before the public.
1 would avoid spread-eagle displays in
advertising; at least, until my business
had grown large enough to warrant it.
Do not think you can get along and do
much business without advertising. It
is the backbone of every good business.
Do not be afraid to put your money out
in that way, even if you do not make
s.‘> for every $1 spent. Large business
firms are pretty well satisfied if they
can make fifteen to twenty percent on
their investment, but a person dabbling
in chickens thinks he ifiust make ten
for one invested, and they often do,
but that should not discourage those
who can not do quite as well.
A neighbor of mine paid $5 for a set
ting of White Runner duck eggs, raised
ten ducks and has just sold the lot for
$35; good enough. Another frie»nd who
runs a back yard poultry farm cleared
$lB5 last year and over S4OO the year
before—clear of all expenses, mind you.
A pretty good iot of pin money from
a recreation pursuit!
Good stock, well managed, will pay
its way and make some money. Last,
but not least, do not fail to exhibit
good stock whenever the opportunity
presents itself.
