They are particularly fond of the different commercial grains. and the seeds of weeds and grass as well. They like the tender blades of grass, or young wheat, oats am! barley ; in fact, anything of the fresh green nature. At this, the fruitful season for all small grasses and weeds, you will find your poultry that hits the range and- the chance, I gathering these seeds in all directions, and of various kinds. Such a. variety is good for them—helps to promote heatlh and stamina. When they do not have the range, of course, they can not secure this wide range of variety. It can, to a certain extent, be supplied by buy ing of the seed man, when they are not too high in price, such grasses as German millet, and Kaffir corn. At times one can buy of his seed merchant seeds that may be too old to sell for sowing but are not really spoiled, at a greatly reduced price. I 1' Illi '■Mi F.J MAEsSHA-Ti The freshness can be imprt out into .shallow boxes, setting t stirring occasionally, so that all may be worked to the surface am! receive the benefit of the di rect rays of the sun. The addi tion of a little millet to the daily rations will often start the hens to laying. Os course, they do not need much of if. < >nc van quite tl equently buy wheat or corn that has been through, a tire and damaged by water at a very low price. If one has the time and inclina tion they can make a good, cheap feed from such grain with proper handling to dry it out, by frequent stirring and turning. You should, however, be able to buy it intelligently and not pay so m-uch for it that the work of turning and handling will make it cost you more than good grain is worth. Some times one can arrange to get the sweep ings from a grain house where corn am! oats and hay are handled. This stuff can be put right out where the chickens can work it over to their hearts' content. It will furnish both food and exercise. Corn and wheat mixed may be soaked for 24 hours and fed tu a good advantage. In such a condition it is quickly assimilated and it does not take as much by about one fourth to satisfy them. A little meal or wheat bran may be mixed into the grain just as you get ready to feed it. All small potatoes, potato, apple and. in fact, all vegetable parings, should be sett and thickened with bran and meal, or either one alone while hot and allow; d to cool dolvn some before feed- Judge Marshall will be glad to answer in this department questions on all points of rearing utility and fancy poultry. It should be seasoned a little just as though you were going to eat it your self. Scraps of meat or trimmings front steaks may be added to the mess. Where the farmer raises beans, peas, sorghum, etc., they may be cooked for chickens with success. In some of our cities where there are large bakeries one can get a number of kinds of offal that makes the finest feed in the world, such as stale or overdone bread, craek ers-and cakes. Such stuff makes fine feed for the young chicks. The. hotels and boarding house? ate sources of food supply for chickens. Foreigners coming into this country claim that Americans waste almost as much as they use. In these times of high prices let us look in upon ourselves and see if we can stop a lot of the leaks. At least try to turn the waste products into ac count. It is not only the city dweller that is wasteful, but the farmer leaves naany a nook and corner vacant that could produce good chicken food at least. These corners could be broken up and planted to suullowers that would make a very much relished chicken food when ripe. In fact, they make a very ornamental back yard set ting for the city lot. It is a good plan to have a chicken note book in which to make memorandum of plans to be carried out. Take a diary, for exam ple. and in the space for April make a note of planting sunflowers, sugar beets for the chickens and so on. In that way you can keep up with the times. Disenfectants.
