Pour the seed out into shallow boxes: setting them into the bright sunshine, stirring occasionally, so that all may be worked to the surface and receive the benefit of the di rect rays of the sun. The addi tion of a little millet to the daily rations will often start the hens to laying. Os course, they do not need much of it. One can quite frequently buy wheat or com that has been through a fire and damaged by water at a very low price. If one has the time and inclina tion they, can make a good, cheap feed from such gtaip wftlj propei handling to dry it out, by frequent stirring and turning. You shpuld. however, be able to buy if intelligently, and not pay so much for 1t that the. work of turning and hanging will make it cost you more than good grain is wot th. Some times one can arrange to get tlie sweep ings from a grain house where corn and onto and hay are handled. This stuff ean be put right out where the chickens can work it over to their heatts’ content. It will furnish both food and exercise. Corn and wheat mixed may be soaked soy 24 hours and fed to a good advantage. In such a condition it is quickly assimilated and it does not take as much by about one fourth to satisfy them. A little meal or wheat bran may be mixed into the grain just as you get ready to feed it. Foreigners > coming into this country claim that Americans waste almost as much as they use. In these times of high prices let us look in upon ourselves and see if we can stop a lot of the leaks. At least try to turn the waste products into ac i count. It is not only the 'city dweller • that is wasteful, but the farmer leaves ■ many a nook and coiner vacant that i could produce good chicken food at least. These corners could be broken I up and planted to sunflowers that , would make a very much relished chicken food when ripe. In fact, they make a very ornamental back yard s t- I ting for the city lot. It is a good plan • to have a chicken note book in which . to make memorandum of plans to be . carried out. Take a diary, for exarn i pie. and in the space for April make a note of planting sunflowers, sugarbeets i for the chickens and so on. In that -way you can keep up with the times. Disenfectants.
