At a special meeting of the board 1 held yesterday afternoon Luther Ros ser. county attorney, was authorized to ' proceed against the three officials, who j failed to tile expense schedules in com i pllance with the provisions of the new I law. as demanded by members of the ■ commission. It Is understood that the I commission’s action will take the form lot’ mandamus proceedings. • A. L. Richardson, recently named | county auditor, was authorized to go lover the books of the four officials who I followed the commission's order and i report to the commission on December 13. when the office expenses for 1913 will |be determined. KINGSTON, JAMAICA, Nov. 21.—At least 30'1 persons were killed in the hurricane and tidal wave which de vastated the western end of this island, according to reports received by the government today. Ten thousand are homeless and the damage is conserva tively estimated at $7,500,000. Meagre advices from the zone of destruction, which are trickling in over shattered telegraph wires, indicate that the death list may go to 1,000. The storm is still raging but its intensity is decreasing. Martial law, enforced by 300 artil lerymen. was declared by the govern ment today at Savenna Lamar and Lu cca, where the full force of the destruc tive elements was felt. The govern ment is distributing shelter tents, blan- [ kets and provisions among the home less. Savanna Lamar and Lueea were nearly wiped off the map by the tidal wave and the wind which blew over 100 miles an hour at the height of the hurricane. Many ships were sunk and the beaeh of Montego bay, upon which the towns were situated, is littered with wreckage and dead bodies. The combined population of the towns was about 5,000. Heavy rains which reached their height Monday night, washed out many miles of the Jamaica railway. A vessel arriving here today brought word that the entire wharf frontage of Montego bay had been wrecked and that over 50 bodies had been recovered in one spot. When the ship left, no at tempt had been made to search the debris of wrecked buildings. THREE U. S. COURTS FOR GEORGIA NOW PROPOSED MACON, GA., Nov. 21.—The lawyers . of Macon and middle Georgia are plan ning to present a petition to the next ■ congress for the creation of three Unit ed States district courts in Georgia. The Macon Bar association will hold a meeting at an early date for the dis cussion of the project. It is planned to retain the Northern and Southern districts, as at present, and to take territory from each so as to create a middle Georgia district. This would include Macon, Augusta and Co lumbus, with Macon as headquarters. The Southern would still have Savan nah, Albany and Valdosta and adjacent territory. The Northern would retain i Atlanta. Rome and Athens. AUGUSTA TO GIVE $3,000 AS CORN CLUB PRIZES AUGUSTA, GA., Nov. 21.—Augusta is making preparations for the second annual corn festival which will be held lit re December 2 to 7, inclusive. More than $3,000 will be given in prizes, and from all over this section of Georgia and South Carolina boys will come to Augusta with entries. In addition to the corn, there will be ' exhibits of cowpeas and canned goods. Miss Mary E. Creswell, who is in charge of the canning club work in Georgia, will be here to demonstrate how corn, ■ tomatoes, beans, peaches and other products can be canned yn the farm. • ■ ■ - DETECTIVE TO SERVE YEAR . FOR BLACKMAILINGSCHEME ROME, GA., Nov. 21— For a black ; mail scheme George McKoy, a former detective, aged 21. attempted to worfl last spring, he must serve one year in the Federal penitentiary at Atlanta. He pleaded guilty to the charge. McKoy, who was a member of the city detective force for some time, addressed a letter to Homer Cone, a young man, and told him if he didn’t leave a certain sum of money under a stone at the Episcopal church, he would go to two Rome men and expose to them improper conduct he alleged Cone had with their wives.
