Hurricane and Tidal Wave
Devastate Western End of
Island—Many Homeless.
I
KINGSTON, JAMAICA, NoV. 21.—At
least 300 persons were killed in the
hurricane and tidal wave which de
vastated the western end of this island,
according to reports received by the
government today. Ten thousand are
homeless and the damage is conserva
tively estimated at $7,500,000. Meagre
advices from tlie zone of destruction,
which are trickling in over shattered
telegraph wires, indicate that the death
list may go to 1,000. The storm is still
raging but its intensity is decreasing.
Martial law, enforced by 300 artil
lerymen, was declared by tlie govern
ment today at Savenna Lamar and Lu
cca, where the full force of the destruc
tive elements was felt. The govern
ment is distributing shelter tents, blan
kets and provisions among the home
less. Savanna Lamar and Lucea were
nearly wiped off the map by the tidal
wave and the wind which blew over |
100 miles an hour at the height of the
hurricane. Many ships were sunk and j
the beach of Montego bay, upon which
the towns were situated, is littered
witli wreckage and dead bodies. The
combined population of the towns was
about 5,000.
Heavy rains which reached their
height Monday night, washed out many
miles of tlie Jamaica railway.
A vessel arriving here today brought
word that the entire wharf frontage of
Montego bay had been wrecked and
that over 50 bodies had been recovered
in one spot. When the ship left, no at
tempt had been made to search the
debris of wrecked buildings.
