HIE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. TH URSDAY, NOVEMBER 21. 1912.
Hi'S SOFT TALK
■ HIM 1 WIVES
Five Angry Brides in Court to
Accuse Conversationalist of
Bigamy.
According to five ample negresses,.
who appeared in criminal division of
superior court to testify against George
Hani, alias Will Hendrick, a negro.
I charged with bigamy, it was Hani’s
gull, and smooth conversation that
won their affection and incidentally
their money.
<>ne woman, Holly Love, voiced the I
sentiments of the rest and Ham's re- |
maining two wives, who could not come I
to court, when she ’told Judge Koan i
i that the prisoner was the "softest talk
ing nigger in Georgia."
According to Holly, Ham began his
matrimonial adventures in 1911, as a
way to make a living without working.
He martied Dora Reed in .Marietta.
Then he came to Atlanta and in six
short months led Hallie Davis, Delta
Austin, Lucy White, Carolina Shepard
and .Martha Bridgeman and herself to
the altar.
"He said he was a chauffeur for the
richest man in Atlanta,” said Holly,
"and was going to get me a job as maid.
I had to pay him $5 for getting insured
before he would get me the job. He
married me, he said, to show me he
wasn’t lying.”
Delia Austin told the court that Ham
said he knew where a treasure of S4OO
was buried and if she would give him
all the money she had, $3.75, he would
dig up the gold and give it to her.
HENRY WATTERSON
NOMINATES BRYAN
FOR AMBASSADOR;
LOUISVILLE, KY„ Nov. 21.—Henry
Watterson, in a Courier-Journal edi
torial, nominates William Jennings
Bryan for ambassador to England, aft
er expressing the fear that if Mr. Bryan
is made secretary' of state the adminis
tration will not be large enough to hol&
botli Mr. Bryan and President Wilson;
also, that the Nebraskan has personal
grudges with Champ Clark and Oscar
Underwood that would interfere.
Therefore, says Mr. Watterson:
"The Courier-Journal out of Its con
suming love for both Mr. Wilson and
Mr. Bryan, nominates Mr. Bryan for
ambassador to the court of St. James.
It will cut the Gordian knot, solve the
problem, lift the veil and remove the
pressure, t i need be no friction or
thought of friction. That ’long jaw’
and that ’bulging bgld spot’ will be
segregated by miles atid leagues t>f the
multitudinous sens ineardine —or words
to that effect —and Champ and Oscar
can come and go between the white
house and the capitol without hin
drance, or disguise. Besides, we do so
want to see Mr. Bryan in knee breeches
and silk stockings.”

eral hours later.

EX-SLAVE. NOW RICH
FROM LIFE IN WEST,
BACK AT OLD HOME
ROME, GA.. Nov. 21. —Life on the
South Dakota plains has been success
ful and profitable for George Daniel,
an ex-slave, and he has returned to
Floyd county after an absence of 47
years.
Shortly after the close of the Civil
war, Daniel left Rome and went West.
He drifted from one place to another
and eventualy settled at White, S. Dak.
He got in right and made money.
Often the negro’s thoughts wandered
back to the old “befo’ de war” days, to
the old plantation, to the watermelon
on th, vine anti to possums and persim
mons. He decided to give up bis life
on the prairies and come back to Geor
gia. He and his two sons have just ar
rived. They are going to have a plan
tation of their own. George is probably
the richest negro in the county.
