We ate often asked the questions, What does it cost to keep a hen a • tear'.' And, Does it pay in eggs for the keep'.’ From the best tests that we have at our command for this Southern sec tion of the country, it is like this: To tal amount of grain per hen, 35 pounds; mash mixture, 35 pound.-, making a total of 70 pounds, tiie average cost of which is $2.40 per 100, or $1.65. Al lowing 12 cents for shell, grit, etc., the total cost would be $1.75 pet lien for the year. Counting the eggs from a well kept thoroughbred hen at 132. or 11 dozen, at 25 cents per dozen, would give a re turn of $2.75, or a net profit of SI.OO. \\ hat better investment, could any one ask foi than that of owning a hen worth sl/10 and .securing a net income of 100 per cent? The estimate I have given is based upon buying all feeds ; t the market prices. When one can produce all or a part of them at less cost, so much the better. By feeding refuse stuff that would otherwise go to waste, a still better showing might be made. A very few hens, kept principally upon scraps from the table, moke really a pick-up. Such a pick-up should be in every one's back yard to convert what would oth erwise spoil into the finest foodstuff in the world.
