POLICE WILL ASK 5250,000 FUND Extra Large Appropriation Is Needed to Carry Out Plan for Sub-Stations. In o:<ier to provide for the two pro- ■ ( police substations, which are wrongly advocated by Chief Beavers ~n tJ members of the police commission, 1]( police department will ask the city couni'il for an appropriation of approxl mat ly $250,000 for next year. The sum allowed for the present year was about $190,000. Chief Beavers now is summing up the proposed improvements and needs of the department for the new’ year, and will submit his detailed report and recommendations to the police com mission at its next meeting, the second Tuesday night in December. The com mission, at that time, will prepare the formal budget of the department and hare it ready for submission to the new finance committee of council the first of the year, when the January appor tionment for all city departments is to be arranged. Beavers Urges Substations. The two substations, which have : egarded as a crying need of the department for a number of years, are considered by Chief Beavers as one of ■j e greatest steps which could be taken tor the advancement and to Increase the efficiency of the police force. The police department, with its present limited facilities, has been un able to keep pace with the rapid prog ress of the city, and these two substa < tions are essential to meet the ever growing demands on the department,” said the chief. "There is not the slightest doubt of the Importance of substations, and this is one great feature of adequate police service in which Atlanta Is far behind the times. The city Is growing fast and has reached such immense propor tions that our one police station falls short of the demands made on It. Emer gency call officers have to make such long runs from the central station that criminals frequently escape before the ' officers can reach the scene. With call officers at two substations, they would be enabled to reach the scene of trou ble quicker, which undoubtedly would mean the capture of more burglars, thieves and thugs, and would serve as a general preventive of burglary and other crimes. The outlying districts deserve more protection, and should get it. Two substations would mean wonderful Improvement In the police service.” HAL GILBERT, MOTOR CYCLE RACER, HURT BADLY IN TRIAL SPIN While practicing on the track at Piedmont park today for the motor - elcle races tomorrow afternoon, Hal Gilbert, of the Southern Motor Car Company, in Edgewood avenue, lost control of his machine and was hurled from the track down an embankment. He was injured badly. Both rider and machine fell in a heap at the bottom of the bank. Gilbert’s face and head were torn and lacerated, and he was otherwise hurt. He was rushed to Grady hospital, where an examination showed that he was not hurt dangerously. His escape from more serious injury is considered remarkable. Gilbert was riding at a lively clip, "hen his motorcycle suddenly swerved. ft the track and dashed down the em bankment. Several other racers and spectators hurried to the scene of the iccident and extricated the injured ider. giving him temporary attention and making him as comfortable as pos. •e pending the arrival of an ambu- NDSESTOPPEOUP WITH CATARRH A Common Sense Treatment for Colds and Catarrh.
