Preparing Fowls for Exhibition
i
There is about as much art in preparing suck fur 1L ■ siiu v
room as there is in raising it. Many a tine* specimen has failed
to- win the prize really deserved by not bei ig
properly groomed anti conditioned. After you |
have selected and culled and have chosen what |
I seems to lie the very best in your flock, and the j
: time draws near for your show or fair, it is oi ;
much importance that your birds should be j
j tamed and easily handled.
There is only one way to accomplish this, ami j
• that is by handling several times a day. until
j they will stand on a barrel or box in the most
attractive manner possible. Then when they j
are taken out to be handled by the judge they I
; will be on their good behavior and not scared |
to death.
, This may sound like a trifling matter, but it is.
on the contrary, of the greatest importance.
About thirty-six hours before shipping to the
show is the time to wash the stock. Almost
all varieties will be improved by a good ami thorough washing.
This should not. be lost sight of, if rhe competition is likely to
be at all strong. The process is
simple, but should be earefulh
and thoroughly done. If the
weather is cold or disagreeable
have a comfortable place by the
fire to dry them.
Use a tub well fllk-d with pure soft
warm water and some good white soup,
and with a sponge or soft brush rub
the right way of the feathers all tlie
time. After tliej have been washed
thoroughly, rinse well through two clean
waters without soap, and if they arc
white fowls put a littii trace of blueing
in the last water, being careful not to
get it too blue, or you will spoil the
whole job. Have the last water nearly
cold and then wipe well with linen tow- I
els to absorb all the water possible.]
Place the coops mar a good’warm lire
or in warm sunshine to drv. The legs
should be brushed crosswise with a
good stiff toothbrush to loosen any ac-
I cumulation of dirt under thes eules near
! the feet. To brighten tiie comb;; and
wattles, use a little diluted vinegar on a
small sponge, nibbing them carefully.
Each male bird should be in a coop to
himself and not allowed with the fe
males, as lie will soil the plumage of
the females, and all will be in better
condition if kept apart.
-Most poultry shows m>v furnish
coops for exhibitions. But where they ;
do not and you desire to make your j
own coops, the regular size is two feet
square by two and a half f< . i high; for
Hnmburgs. Spanish and sni'iiler breeds. ;
two feet high will do. Make th< front I
of nice rounds or small neat slats or
heavy wire rods, with a door to open or
slide Up. If possible, go with your birds
to tiie show or fair and look after their
welfare, position, etc. Much depends
upon the details of showing.
After birds lia\ been washed, do
] not allow them to get out. where they
l can till their feathers full of dust, and
: ruin their damp plumage. Keep th en
] upon clean cut straw or hay. Ha.r
--i dust is objectionable on the same uc-
