The Value of Turkeys -
This noble and valuable fowl, it is claimed, is a native of
America. There arc a number of distinct breeds in this country.
but when it comes to the market part of the
business, only two are usually seen, the Bronze
and White Holland. In fact, the Bronze is the
turkey of this country, and well it might be,
for it is of grand proportions and sterling
wort h.
It is supposed to be a cross of the wild and
the old Pennsylvania turkey, with the wild
blood strongly predominating. By breeding for
lustrous plumage, the glistening bronze has
been intensified to a marked degree.
The Bronze is lhe largest of the turkey family,
and the weights run about as follows. Cock
erel, 25 pounds: yearling cock. 32 pounds; cock
two years old and over. 36 pounds; pullet. 16
pounds.
The White Holland, while not. so generally
admired as the Bronze, has many good qualities
to recommend it. It is a little r
for that reason alone, finds a go
those who have had trouble in
keeping the Bronze at home.
They are not so large as the
Bronze and mature a bit quicker,
but ivhen it comes to beauty,
nothing quite equals the Bronze.
Why turkeys are not more generally
raised on th< farms of the South we
can not understand. They are in great
demand, and this demand is constantly
om the inenase. Prices range a little
higher each year until they have al
most gone beyond the reach of the av
erage man's tabic, even for Thanksgiv
ing and the holidays. This should not
be the ease.
The turkey is a great forager, and
will find most of his living in the field
on the average farm, and we see no
reason why the farmer of this country
should not raise a flock of, say, 50
Bronze turkeys every summer that will
bring him from $75 to SIOO, without
his having missed the feed they have

some good Bronze or some other pure
breed of turkeys, we .ould not attempt
to raise them for market.
Some of our Southern states are fast
coming to the front in the raising of
turkeys, notably Texas. 1 ennessee and
Kentucky. The last two named are
hard to beat when it comes to flue
Bronze turkeys. For example, at a win
ter Nashville poultry show there were
on exhibition over 100 Bronze turkeys,
a great sight for lovers of the noble
and beautiful.
Let tlie good work go on.
