6 20,000 CMS TO BE PLANTED BT STUDENTS Pupils of Public and Private Schools Will Observe Arbor Day, December 4, Pupils of the Atlanta public schools of Washington seminary. Miss Wood berry’s school, Marist college, Pea cock’s. Cox college and the Georgia Mil. itary academy at College Park, Donald Fraser and Agnes Scott at Decatur and other institutions will join in Wednes day, December 1 (Arbor day), to plant more trees than have ever before been planted at one time in the history of Atlanta. Th extensive planting will be made possible by the gift of 20,000 young catalpa trees from the Jacobs' Pharma cy Company, through Charles A. Smith and others. The trees have been a year In growth in a Cincinnati nursery and have attained a height of about two feet. Full directions will go with the trees and Mr. Smith says the public, and es pecially the public school children, may have trees for the asking. It is asserted that there are few. if any, catalpa tires in Atlanta, and that the opportunity to plant this beautiful shade tree will be eagerly grasped. Ca talpa was the American Indian name in Carolina for the tree of the genuFyjt talpa. The tree has large, simple leaves, with terminal panacles of showy flow ers and long linear pods with wingdd seeds. It blooms in ten years. The ■wood is soft and light, but very dura ble, being used for railroad crossties and telephone poles. The catalpa fre quently grows 50 feet high and 18 to 24 feet in diameter. One Planted by Byron. One of the oldest and largest trees in England is a catalpa in Grays Inn gardens, which Lord Hymn is supposed to thave planted. The growth In ten years usually Is twenty feet. From November to February is the time for planting in the South. J. Stirling Morton, of Nebraska, fa ther of the late Paul Morton, head of the Equitable, founded “Arbor day." and .the movement to plant trees on a certain day each year has spread over the United States. Although most of the local public schools will be able to participate Wed nesday, the Forrest Avenue school, cor ner of Forrest avenue and Randolph street, Miss Hattie Speer, principal, will be unable to ptant because the proper grading on the lot has not been done. Hodges, Democrat, on the official re turns, has a plurality of 81 over Cap per, Republican, for governor, bu the suits may change the result by having the rejected ballots counted. The record number thus far. 227, was issued yesterday. The weary chief clerk In the marriage license bureau yesterday ad mitted with a sigh that the average dur ing November has been from 175 to 200. The average number of licenses issued dally during the year is from 100 to 125. CONGRESS PREPARES FOR ARCHBOLD IMPEACHMENT WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 The first meeting of the house managers who a r e to bring impeachment p oceedings against Judge Robeit W. Archbold in the senate next Tuesday was held to day and the complete list of witnesses to be summoned was turned over to the sergeant-at-arms of the house. He is supposed to have uicide by drinking arbolh FEDERAL PRISONER IN COURT TO URGE REDUCTION OF TERM Tired of confinement in the Federa.l penitentiary, Charles Anderson, a gray-, haired prisoner, sentenced five years, ago to ten years for robbing a post- i office in the state of Washington, ap peared in the United States court to plead for hH freedom on the grounds that his sentence was too long. Anderson was sentenced to five years for breaking and entering a postoffice, two and a half years for stealing stamps and two and a half years for stealing money. He pleads that he has been a good prisoner, and served a term of five years, and that a further term would be oppressive. He appeared be fore Judge Newman on a writ of ha beas corpus. The prisoner is some fifty years old and a perfect type of the professional yeggman. He showed little interest in the proceedings this morning, though today was the first time he had been outside the walls of the Federal peni tentiary in five years. MAN TIRES OF CONTRACT HE MADE WITH HIS WIFE CHICAGO, Nov. 28.—Charges that after living ten years with him as his common law wife, her husband became tired of her and went to a younger woman, were made by Mrs. Helen Oswald, of Cleve land, Ohio, when she appeared before Municipal Judge Gemmill, In the court of domestic relations, to prosecute Joseph Oswald, 35 years old, on a charge of wife abandonment. When arraigned in court, Oswald’s attorney attempted to secure his discharge on the ground that such a mar riage was invalid in this state. Judge Gemmell refused to discharge him, and ordered him to stand trial on the charge December 4 BOY. TWELVE YEARS OLD, IS A FORGER OF CHECKS CHICAGO, Nov. 28.—Leonard Glowan ski, twelve years old, probably the young est bogus check passer ever arrested In Chicago, told Judge Pinckney, in the ju venile court, that two of his brothers had induced him to sign and pass fraudulent checks. The boy said the money had been spent for candy and 5-cent theaters. The case was continued until his story could be investigated. The famous McCullough criminal as sault case, tried twice in Gordon county before Judge Fite, and twice reversed by the court of appeals, and out of which grew the contempt rule under which Judge Fite was fined SSOO by the court of appeals, came up for a third hearing In Gordon court today, and was disposed of by the defendant agreeing to a plea of guilty, providi d his sen tence of twenty years, as originally im posed, be reduced to eight years. A motion to disqualify Judge Fite was overruled, and the case came up in regular order. Solicitor Maddox stated to the court that the woman in the case now is in delicate health and that he would not care to bring her into court again on this case, if it might be avoided. Consultation between law yers representing the state and McCul lough resulted in a plea of guilty and a content verdict of'eight years in the penitentiary for McCullough. Judge Fite said he was reluctant to affree to this, but in the circumstances of the woman’s state of health he would do so, and he entered a court order ac cordingly. Walker, president of the At lanta Huilders exchange, has been com piling figures on the growth of Atlanta and is authority for the statement that the city ranks twentieth in building operations among the cities of the United States, although it ranks thirty first in population. Mr. Walker made this assertion last night at Durand’s case at the monthly dinner of the At lanta exchange. Mr. Walker also declared that the application for a permit for the con struction of th, Winecoff hotel, which will cost $300,000, indicates that the year’s building aggregate will exceed $10,000,000, against $6,215,900 in 1911, a gain of 50 per cent. MOTHER OF TRIPLETS GAINS NEARLY 30 POUNDS CHICAGO, Nov 28.—Physlcans are puz zled over the remarkable case of Mrs. A. V. Brotout, who gained 29 pounds during a visit of the stork which brought her triplets, all boys. The first of the trio arrived last Wednesday. On that day the mother weighed 431 pounds. The otb.er two boys arrived Saturday. Mrs. Grotout .weighed 460 today. DAYLIGHT BURGLARS RANSACK HOME OF PASTOR; GET GEMS Detectives are searching for several hundred dollars worth of jewels and other valuables stolen by burglars from the home of Dr. A. F. Sherrill, a Col lege Park minister. Dr. Sherrill’s ho .ie in West Walker avenue nearly was wrecked by the marauders, the whole house being ransacked. Furnishings, wearing apparel and other articles were scattered over the floor. The jewels were taken from a strong box, which was battered open with a ham mer. Dr. and Mrs. Sherrill were spending the day In Atlanta. The burglars, in broad daylight, and in plain view of numerous residences, forced open a window, and, climbing inside, helped themselves. The burglary was not dis covered until Dr. and Mrs. Sherrill re turned home. Most of the jewels were highly prized by Mrs. Sherrill. SENATE IS DEAD WASHINGTON, Nov. 28.—Daniel M. Ransdell, sergeant-at-arms of the United States senate, died at 4:30 this morning In the Garfield hospital, fol lowing an operation for angina pecto ris four weeks ago. His death was en tirely unexpected. Physicians were summoned, but could do nothing to save hig life.
