Preparing Fowls for Exhibition
There is about as much art in preparing stock tor the show
; room ws there is in raising it. .Many a fine specimen has failed
to win the prize really deserved by not being
properly groomed and conditioned. After you
have selected and culled and have chosen what.
I seems Io be the very best in your flock, and the
time draws near for your show or fair, it is of
| much importance that your birds should be
tamed and easily handled.
There is only one way to accomplish tins, and
that is by handling several times a day, until
they will stand on a barrel or box in the most
attractive manner possible. Then when they
are taken out to be handled by the judge they
will be on their good behavior and not scared
j to death.
This may sound like a trifling matter, but it is,
on the contrary, of the greatest importance.
About thirty-six hours before shipping to the
show is the time to wash the stock. Almost
! ail varieties will be improved by a good and thorough washing.
This should not be lost sight of, if the competition is likely to
be at. all stixme'. The process is .
ue ai ail strong. i tie process is
simple, but should be carefully
and thoroughly done. If the
weather is cold or disagreeable
have a comfortable place by the
fire to dry them.
Use a tub well filled with pure soft
warm water and some good white soap,
and -with a sponge or soft brush rub
the right way of the feathers all the
time. After they have been washed
thoroughly, rinse well through two clean
waters without soap, and if they are
white fowls put a little trace of blueing
in the last water, being careful not to
get it too blue, or you will spoil the
whole Job. Have the last water nearly
cold and then wipe well with linen tow
els to absorb all the water possible.
Place the coops near a good warm fire
or in warm sunshine to drv. The legs
should !«■ brushed crosswise with a
good stiff toothbrush to loosen any ac
cumulation of dirt under thes cales near
the feet. To brighten the combs anil
wattles, use a little diluted vinegar on a
small sponge, rubbing them carefully.
Each male bird should be in a coop to
himself and not allowed with the fe
males, as he will soil the plumage of
the females, and all will be in better
condition If kept apart.
Most poultry shows now furnish
coops for exhibitions. But where they
do not and you desire to make your
own coops, the regular size is two feet
square by two and a half feet high; for
Spanish and smaller breeds,
two feet high will do. Make the front
of nice rounds or small neat slats or
heavy wire rods, with a door to open or
slide up. If possible, go with your birds
to the show or fair and look after their
welfare, position, etc. Much depends
upon the details of showing.
After birds have been washed, do
not allow them to get out where they
can fill their feathers lull of dust and
ruin their damp plumage. Keep them
upon clean cut straw or hay. Saw
dust is objectionable on the same ac-

ASHEVILLE SHOW.
Asheville, n. c„ Nov. 27.—The
sixth annual show of the Asheville
1 Poultry and Pet Stock association will
■ be held December 3, 4 and 5 in the old
armory headquarters. The location is
an ideal one, being within easy reach of
the business portion of the city. A
! thousand birds are expected, also many
1 hundred entries of i>et stock. The build
- ing is admirably arranged for a poultry
show, being very large, well lighted and
well ventilated. It is os constructed
that the promoters of the show will be
able to group all the birds of one class,
and the pet stock department will be in
a separate room from that which will
be used for showing birds.
It will be recalled that the poultry
show in this city was held in this build
ing, and the exhibition was an unus
ually' successful one and was largely
attended.
The show will be judged by Dr. 11. P.
Clarke, of Indianapolis, Ind., who is a
specialist on Games and Orientals.
Judge Clarke will also be one of the
judges of the Atlanta show next month.
James P. Kerp, of Haw River, N. C.,
will be the other judge.
The show is the only classified Pit
Game show in the South. Entries have
been received from all parts of the
country. The State Club cup of the
Light Brahma club will be offered at
this show.
For premium lists and entry blanks
