The Value of Turkeys
This noble and valuable fowl, il is claimed, is a native oi
America. There are a number of (list net breeds in this country.
but when it comes to the market part of the
business, only two are usually seen, rhe Bronze
and White Holland, In fact, the Bronze is the
turkey of this country, and well it might he,
for it is of grand proportions and sterling
worth.
It is supposed Io be a cross of the wild and
the old Pennsylvania turkey, with the wild
blood strongly predominating. By breeding for
lustrous plumage, the glistening bronze has
been intensified io a marked degree.
The Bronze is the largest of the turkey family,
and the weights run about as follows. Cock
erel, 25 pounds; yearling cock, 32 pounds; cock
two years old and over, 3G pounds; pullet 111
pounds.
The White Holland, whilt* not so generally
admired as the Bronze, has many good qualities k' '
to recommend it. It is a little more domestic in its habits, and.
for that reason alone, finds a good many supporters among
those who have had trouble in
keeping the Bronze at home,
i 'l'liey tire not so large as the
| Bronze and mature a bjt quicker,
but when it comes to beauty,
nothing quite equals the Bronze.
Why turkeys are not more generally
raised on the farms of the South we
can not understand. They are in great
demand, and this demand is constantly
on th< increase. Prices range a little
higher cacti year until they have al
most gone beyond the reach of the av
erage man’s table, even for Thanksgiv
ing and the holidays. This should not
be the ease.
Tile turkey is a great forager, and
will find most of his living in the field
on the average farm, and we see no
reason why the farmer of this country
should not raise a flock of, say, 50
Bronze turkeys every summer that will
bring him from $75 to SIOO, without
his having missed the feed they have

eaten. They are great foragers and
will clean up much waste grain that
would otherwise be lost.
Do not try to make a success of tur
keys in your back yard. It will nert pay.
They must have the variety and exer
cise that goes with tne free range.
Whatever you do, do not content your
self with some little old scrub breed
of turkeys that happen to be raised on
the farm near you. If we could not get
some good Bronze or some other pure
breed of turkeys, we .ould not attempt
to raise them for market.
Some of our Southern states are fast
coming to the front in the rat sing of
turkeys, notably Texas. Tennessee and
Kentucky. The last two named are
hard to beat when it comes to fine
Bronze turkeys. For example, at a win
ter Nashville poultrj' show there were
on exhibition over 100 Bronze turkeys,
a great sight for lovers of the noble
and beautiful.
Let the good work go on.
