EDITED JUIXTI, T. J. MARSHALL.
Chickens Need a Variety
Tlkti- arc so inmiy reports coming in about chickens being
out of condition, in one way or another, that we are led to be-
lieve that people raising chickens become care
less in their management, ami particularly with
the growing youngsters. Much of this trouble
is caused b\ a lack of variety in the food. We
are very likely to get into a rut by feeding our
chickens one or two tilings day in and day out.
lor weeks ami even months at a time—much of
the lime with little or no green stuff—until it
is no wonder they get out of condition.
(thickens, both old ami young, require a lot
ot good green stuff of some kind to keep them
in health. If yon will take the trouble to no
tice your flock of chickens on the range, you
will see that they arc foraging for grass most of
the time, which clearly indicates that such ma
terial forms the bulky part of their diet. But
this is not all; the solid or grain part should
be changed from time to time in order that they
may not become tired of their rations. It does not matter so
much about the exactness of the changes.
Good, sharp grit is an essential to health, and should not be
neglected. Many small places and yards upon which chickens
have been kept for years have become utterly depleted of any
thing in the nature of suitable sharp grit, and in such eases it
is the worst kind of shiftlessness to neglect to provide it. Most
poultr\ supply houses keep poultry grit for sale at a nominal
price per 100 pounds. Or if you do not care to buy it pick up
sonic good hard rocks and with an axe or hammer crush them until
they are about the size of an English pea for grown fowls, and the
smaller particles will be suited to the little ones’ use.
Another important factor in the care of hens is the spading
or plowing of the runs that they may have the fresh soil to work
over, and also be tree from the filth and dust which accumu
lates in all chicken runs, no matter how much care is exercised.
Keep everything lively, and on the go about your chicken
ranch, and you will have but little sickness to contend with.
