"Pouiltrv, Pet and Livestock A Little of Our Experience at the Poultry Shows At a recent country town show we were very much pleased with the enthusiasm shown and the eagern< s lor knowledge along the line of better poultry. Wo went into the show room in the morning ready for work. We found quite a variety of fowls and a greater variety of coops. This was but their second show, cut right from the original timber, ami was necessarily a little crude in some ways, bnt the people were keen and bright, and ready to absorb anything that might come their wfly. One of the first question put was: Could they look on as the judging v;<s bci sg done.’ Or, did I want to do the work privately. We as sured them that as the crowd was small and looked very orderly we should like to have them for an audience. And it was certainly an appreciative audience, i’his bunch of exhibitors, for they were really all exh’hitors. I think. were about half ladies, ami you know they can not be excelled when it comes to the question ot investigating. Thev had gone through the exhibits prefix thoroughly and *- decided where they thought the Newnan’s Show a Great Success The third annual exhibit "I lhe Cow eta Poultry association, wljjch opened Wednesday, has proven a big success, both in attendance and in the number an<! variety of the exhibits. I hcie are nearly five hundred entries, and includ ed in the display are worn- of the hand somest birds ever shown Georgia. Mi. Loring Brown, of Smyrna, <»«., who was engaged by the association to Judge the exhibits, .stated Wednesday that he had never sc- n anywhere a prettier lot of high-class fowls, not -o many, in proportion to the number of exhibits; that nothing better war ■ shown at any of the big poultry shows I held in the state this year. The attendance at the show was line. I considering the weather. llianksgiv ing dav was the banner day. R. F. Hart, of <'<-11-g- Park, "on the 525 cash prize for' the largest and best display. Mr. Hart entered 55 White Ijcghorns. H. J. Israel was < i-ond in largest display, bating entered 50 I'iiii Rocks. Mr. Israel had th- best pullet , in the show. O. L. ('handler, of New - . nan, Ga., won beet pen anti lien in the show. His entry va.- Whit-- Orping tons. V. A. Ham, of Newnan, had a mag nificent display of Buff Orpingtons. Huff Rocks 62, White Orpingtons 54. It. I. Reds 17, Barred Rocks 44. There were 2a Whit-' Indian Runners, also a few grand spec imen of turkeys. The men did a 'good deal of talkin'' but you know the I ladles are usually too bashful to talk I and are not much given to that, any- I way; bnt, by drawing them out a little i I found out they were anxious to get all the pointers they -anilil. i'pon my rec ommendation. some of them decided to 'drop two out of the four varieties they were keplng and put their increased energies ami attention upon the re maining .wo. The exhibition seemed to run .almost entirely to white fowls-- White * > pingtolis. White Wyandottes, White Leghorns, etc. The question of washing white fowls lame up for discussion, ami how much corn starch should be used after the wash, to assist m -trying out the plum age an-1 otherwise beautifying it. We advised that in a ease when' there was a ’urge family of children to feed, only about n pound to the chicken should be used, as a matter of economy. As has been said, they are living pictures in black and white. Neck, hackle and tail black, while their bodies are pure white. In size and shape they largely re semble the Leghorn, being hardly so large and layers of fair sized white eggs. Be cause of their great egg production they have been called Jerusalem or everlasting layers. They are practically non-setters. While they can not be recommended as a market fowl on account of being a lit tle small, their ether desirable features more than make up for this lack. The}’ are hardy, vigorous and good foragers.
