Visit the Poultry Shows
Eariners. villajfers, friends: if you are all interested in poul
try and what it returns to you, ami there is a poultry show to be
held within a hundred miles of where you live,
lake a trip and visit it. It will do you good.
If you are too busy rocking the Imus oul of the
stable, send your wife in your place. She will
get the value of her railroad fare out of it. I
will guarantee it. She will be more than likely
to come with advanced ideas in regard to the
value of good stock on the farm, and she will
tell yon that she would rather have a flock of
pure bred poultry if it did not produce any
more per head than common scrub stock, just
for the satisfaction of having something pleas
ing to the eye. But yon can depend upon it
that you would not ! e compelled to get all your
returns from a crop of thoroughbred chickens in
mere .satisfaction. They will roll in dimes right
if given a fail chance.
You mav have about decided to start with
some good breed of chickens, but are puzzled as Io which kind
would suit you ami your conditions the best. A trip to the
show ami some talks with the different exhibitors as to the mer
its ami demerits of the breeds will help you to decide the question
ami make your selection.
Further than that, you can ascertain who are the reliable
breeders to purchase stock and eggs from, and can get pointers
on breeding ami handling. Perhaps you may see incubators in
opei’ht.ion and get a chare to talk with those who have been suc
cessful in hatching and raising chickens in that way. There are
a hundred and one things to interest and instruct the wide
awake man or woman who is attending a poultry show. 1 do not
ask you to take my word for it; go ami see for yourself.
The poullry business is destiuedto become the greatest industry
in this country, ami that time isnot very far distant, so if you
want to be able to share in suchg prominent and profitable busi
ness. \oii had better be getting yi>ur eyes rubbed open ami ready
to take in the situation before itgets above and beyond your
reach.

Judge Marshall: Are all the va
rieties of Wyandottes the same,
with exception of the color? In
other words, can a breeder expect
just as much in the way of eggs
and meat from the Columbian
Wyandottes as from the white va
riety, which is so highly spoken of
as a layer? J. A. S.
Jackson, Ga.
ANSWER.—AII the different varie
ties of Wyandottes are ‘made” breeds,
produced by crossing different breeds
and recrossing until tlie desired results
of color of plumage, legs, shape of
comb, etc., are obtained. You can read
ily imagine hpw differ, nt was the cross

produce the color desired.
The first and general aim in produc
ing 11 new breed-of any kind is to get
the color to come as near the ideal as
possible. Almost everything else is
thrown to tlie wind tn the great ef
fort. After color lias been reasonably
well established, then other points are
considered, such as perfecting comb,
shape of body, tail, etc. In various

In the case of Columbian Wyandottes
the Light Brahma crosses played an
important part and very naturally we
see many of the Brahma characteris

chances are that they will not mature
so quickly as the two mentioned, either.
But when they are fully matured they
will astonish you in the amount of

roasters they should be second to none.
Being rathe!- slow in maturing, they
will retain their tender, juicy flesh
much longer than the quick maturing
breeds. This is worth remembering.
