Mixing Strains
•Judge F. J. Marshall—ls 1 should buy first-class eggs from
two first-class breeders, select the best from each, and mate
them together next year; then if 1 should take
a cockerel that has blood of both these strains
and mate him with my best hens hatched from
the eggs purchased, would that give me a pret
ty good strain? Would it be in-breeding or
line-breeding ’
Cuthbert, Ga. SUBSCRIBER.
REPLY—If yon are breeding any of the
parti-colored varieties you would be very likely
to produce a good many culls or off-colored
chicks. Unless the stock of the two breeders
from whom you purchased had been bred from
about the same stock it would not be at all ad
visable to make such cross. It might give you
health and vigor in your flock, but if you are
going to breed for show stock and the fancy,
1 would not advise it at all.
It would not be line-breeding or in-breeding, and the results
would be anything but satisfactory as to coloring and uniformi
ty in the flock.
The better plan would be to order eggs from some reliable
breeder, asking him to furnish you eggs from two or three dif
ferent pens, anil get enough eggs to give you some chance to cull
and select. Then you could mate the male from one yard with
the male from another yard, and vice versa. The following year
you could mate the cockerels back with their dams, and the pul
lets back to their sires. This would be a start in the direction of
line-breeding, and it is usually satisfactory.
Whatever you cjo do not mix a lot of different breeders’
stock together. After a breeder gets his stock pretty well es
tablished and runs some three or four breeding yards, he can
by marking the chicks from each yard in a different manner, be
able to make all the crosses he will need for the health of his
flock.
Keep a record of all your
chicks and all the crosses you
make, and you will not be dis
appointed if you use good judg
ment in mating.
Newton County
Show
The Newton County Poultry show,
held in Covington last week, was a
show of class and a credit to the state.
Over 700 birds were exhibited. Fifty
eight breeders had birds in the show,
competing for the twenty-one cups that
were offered. These cups were as pret
ty as any seen this season. The White
Leghorn entry, with 137 birds, was the
largest; R. I. Reds, with 93, second:
White Orpingtons. 66: Buff Orping
tons, 64; Black Orpingtons, 60; Barred
Rocks, 50; White Wyandottes, 35. About
25 Bantams were entered, also the same
number of F. and W. ducks.
The White Runners numbered 15;
pigeons, 20. and turkeys. 8. D. M. Ow
ens, of Athens. Tenn., judged the birds
The attendance was very good, espe
cially the first few days of the show.
The show was featured with a strong
class of pen entries.

OLD BATTLEFIELD
BOUGHT FOR LOTS
125 Acres on Collier Road To
Be Divided and Placed on
Market in Spring.
Announcement was made todaj- of a.
real estate deal which will mean the
speedy development of a great tract of
suburban acreage to be cut into large
lots and thrown on the market in the
spring. This is the sale of 125 acres in
land lots 153, 154, 185 and 186, Howell
Mill road section, to the Provident
Trust and Security Company by Na
than Lyon. trustee for Martha V.
Lyon, Mary Lyon Ficklin, Kate H.
Lyon, Albert H. Lyon, Annie Lyon and
Lizzie Lyon, of Atlanta, and William
R. Lyon, of Alabama, for $60,000, on
terms of $15,000 cash and three annual
notes of a like amount each.
This property includes Federal and
Confederate rifle pits and trenches built
during the battle of Atlanta, on General
Sherman’s march. The breastworks will
be saved by the developing company
and sold off in 200 and 400-foot lots,
along with the rest of the tract. It is
the plan of the managers to develop the
125 acres, together with 150 acres pur
chased some time ago, into a section
after the fashion of Ansley Park, with
winding drives and an eight-acre park
in the center. An additional SIOO,OOO
will be expended improving the tract,
until approximately $250,000 will have
been put into it.
The property Is on both sides of the
Collier road from Hemphill avenue to
the Howell Mill road, on both sides of
the Howell Mill road a mile each way,
and also on one side of Hemphill for
one mile. It is five miles from town,
half a mile from the Buckhead and
Brookhaven car line and close to the
country homes of Thomas B. Felder
and Paul Vose and extensive acreage
holdings of Hoke Smith. Several other
country places, it is said, will go up In
the vicinity in a few months. The
managers say the tract is ripe for sub
division, since it now has water, lights
and aewers. Mr. Lyon lived on it thir
teen years, and gives up his cottage to
move into town.
