Reply.—You could hardly expect
to realize the above amounts in so
short a time unless you made un
usual i Hot ts ami were remarkably
successful with your sales, in the
fancy, it takes time to advertise
.and become known by advertising
and exhibiting your stock at the
fairs and shows. True, it, is one of
the most reliable ami successful
businesses the average man can
lake up. But we remember also
that the averagt man can not start
In any business that is n< vy to him
and be abb' to work up a $1,200
profit in two or three years.
In the first place it would not be
advisable to start with more than
one variety, two at the most. Work
with them until you feel that you
pretty thoroughly understand them
and can breed them to produce a
first-class number of first-class
chickens.
After that, if you feel that you
can do more business by increasing
rhe number of varieties, you might
add them. It lias been my obser
vation, however, that as a rule the
oYiv-specialty breeders, and partic
ularly those who have made their
aim high, have been the most suc
cessful in the matter of making
money, and reputation, too, for that
matter, for the two are almost
synonyms. I suggest that you make
a start in first-class market poul
try and eggs, working into the fan
cy. by advertising, as fast as seems
advisable. The market side of the
business would help your bank ac
count along while you were waiting
for your reputation that must nec
essarily come with a good fancy
trade. There is lots of work con
nected wit+i either branch of the
business, and he who has a dif
ferent opinion in regard to that
matter had best not undertake
either. With the amount of land
you have, if tillable, you should be
able to produce your feedstuffs,
both grain and green. Your poul-

SCALY LEGS.
Judge Marshall—Can you give me a
remedy that will rid my chickens of
very rough or scaly legs? I did not
have, much of it until this year. Dur
ing the winter I bought some hens to
add to my flock, and they had very
rough legs. Since then many of mine
seem to have developed it. Is it con
tagious? MRS. J. R. L.
Rockdale, Miss.
Reply.—Scaly leg is caused by a
minute parasite working under the
scales of the leg and piling out the
debris all over the surface, causing
the unsightly appearance noted. A
goo<l remedy is made by adding to a
pint of kerosene all the crude nap
thaline flakes it will dissolve. Put
this mixture into an old can hailed
up to the side of the chicken house,
and dip the affected legs down to
where the feathers begin. Repeat
this once a week for three or four
weeks. Do not get it onto the feath
ered parts.
INFLAMMATION OF CROP.
Judge F. J. Marshall—What can 1 do
with chickens that have full crops and
stand around and work their necks as
if they had something in their throats?
1 thought they were crop-bourtd until
I opened two or three and found no ob
struction. F. S. J.
Newnan, Ga.
Reply.—Your chickens must be
suffering from crop inflammation,
caused by some poisonous sub
stance that they have found to eat
or drink. It may have been drink
ing from some old pint cans or
Stagnant pond filled with poisonous
Weeds and grasses. A careful in
vestigation will usually reveal the
cause. Confine your fowls to clean,
small inelosure and give pure well
water to drink and feed strictly
fresh, wholesome grain (not musty),
and 1 think you will find that they
will soon recover.
