Cornell Student Gains Weight on Reduced Food
LIVES ON 85c PER WEEK
ITJfA< Dr Raymond Prior
Sanford, of Ithaca, a freshman in the
Cornell College of Agriculture, upon his
own initiative, has undertaken an ex
periment in the study of th> actual cost
of sufficient food to keep the body in a
normal, healthy condition. He is mak
ing (la experiment upon himself, hav
ing begun on July 4. 1912, when he
entered the summer school here. The
average cost of his food since that time
has been 85 cents a week.
Two years ago.” said Sanford. "I
read of an undergraduate at Harvard
who. while working his way through
the university, lived on a dollar a week.
When I came here this summer my
funds were small and waiting on table
took so much time that I thought 1
would try to see just how cheaply a
fellow could live without giving up
anything essential to good health and
comfort. The first week 1 lived on but
ter, eggsand milk, with a little vegeta
ble stuff added. That week $1.50 in
cluded my gas bill.
Tin second week 1 substituted pea
nut butter for regular butter, believing
it contained all of the fat that butter
contains. I cut out eggs; they were too
expensive. I went out on the lawns and
dug dock and dandelions and ate that
for my green stuff During the last five
weeks of sumim . school my board hill
was $4.25.

Mr- Loula D. Bai low is seeking to set

Mrs Blanche Robarts. who was shot
and killed on August 27 last by her
husband.
Mrs. Barlow claims that just before
her sister died she willed all of her
property to her. The heirs of A. M.
Robarts, the husband, who also killed
himself, claim that inasmuch as Mrs.
Robarts died before her husband, he
became her heir, and that consequently
the property reverted to tils heirs at his
death, shortly after that <tf his wife.
Tin hearing of the contest was before

Miss Martha Van Rensselaer, profes
