Poultry Failures on the Farm It is a strange fact that farmers know less about the proper management of poultry than almost any other class of people M’ho attempt to do anything with it. The prin cipal reason is that, while they have given good attention to other farm stock, they have not Looked deeply into matters relating to poultry. They have not considered the raising of poultry as a business at all, but simply a lean-to or ad junct. The consequence is that while the farmer gives attention to other farm stock, he has simply al lowed his hens to manage for themselves. The sick cow, sheep or hog is watched with the greatest anxiety, and treated with the best and utmost care to prevent loss. Infectious diseases are guarded against in every possible way. Farmers are beginning to learn that there Ls profit to be gained from the small things on the farm, and that the capital invested in poultry, though not usually great, is sure to bring in a return, and they are turning their attention in that direction, having the advantage of ready sales at all seasons and home mar kets for their products. But the neglect of years places them at a disadvantage, as they find that while they are familiar with details of farm management and the care of animals, they are lacking in the knoivledge so es sential to success with poultry, especially when they Yvant to ven ture in the keeping of poultry in large numbers. Without any real experience in that direction, though accustomed to having hens in the barnyards from boyhood, they make failures that might other wise be avoided with the possession of knowledge in the matter of poultry raising. Failures occur from attempt ing too much without experience. There are essentia! details that can only be performed by those who are experienced, and the first steps should Leghorns. He must know the conditions under which the breed he selects will do the best and give the greatest re turns. The best laying breed may prove a miserable failure. It is a difficult matter to teach any one who has never considered the mat ter that the common barnyard stock Is not as good as any other. That one stumbling block the farmer seems de termined not to remove, and it is a dangerous one, for as long as lie clings to old traditions and adheres to former customs he will fail to recognize the im portance of Improvement in other di rections. It takes a nerve and determi nation to make these radical changes, but better houses, better breeds, sys tematic feeding, cleanliness, and the carfu] selection of breeding stock are essential, and if neglected will surely result in failure.
