Building Hints .for the Novice
This article is intended solely for the man who wishes a few
I fowls, either for recreatioo or diversion, with the object of fresh
eggs for breakfast, or for the youth on the farm
who has some ideas of his own he wants to see
[ carried out.
First of all. the beginner needs a place of
shelter for his prospective flock. Perhaps you
may have a shed that is not utilized for any
purpose at, present which you can convert into
a fairly good roosting place for a dozen hens.
If you have nothing of the kind and live in
town or village, a suitable house can be con
structed at a cost of from SIO.OO to $25.00. For
the former amount, if you are handy with tools
you can do most of the work yourself, you can
construct a neat appearing shed, say 10x12 feet
on the ground, *8 feet high in front and 6 feet
at the rear, with a sloping roof. Let it be neat
and tidy in apppearance, yet not fancy.
The roosts,'nest boxes, feeding troughs, and
all accessories should be movable and easy to take from the house
to clean. You will need some yards fenced with wire netting,
using boards two feet high at
the ground to prevent fighting
between male birds where the
yards join. Thirty to forty dol
lars will fit up things in pretty
good shape for beginning.
On tbe farm, where a bright boy with
the consent of his father can utilize
some outbuilding already up, the cost
of tarred paper and a few extras to re
model the shed will be but nominal.
Better look into the matter and plan
some before you commence your op
erations and find out about the final
cost. Then you will not be disgusted
at any complications that may arise.
Haying secured comfortable quar
ters, go to some one you can trust and
select a dozen or fifteen Barred Rock,
Rhode Island Red or Wyandotte pul
lets and a good male.
Be sure the special strain you are se
lecting from is noted for good layers.
Let them al) be good, vigorous speci
mens. Next select a male fully ma
tured and of equal vigor.
With such a layout you can soon
test the sincerity of your fancy to en
gage in the work. Here begins the
task. Fowls must be cared for, not
neglected. They must, in confinement
be prudently, regularly and Judiciously
fed, watered and kept clean. A morn
ing meal of quantity to .satisfy their
growing needs may consist of table
scraps, warmed in winter and mixed
with crushed small grain, rye or oats.
Fresh water must be provided in ves
seis they can not foul. Feed should be
given In a clean trough. One corner of
the house should be separated from the <
roosting part by a board a foot high,
into which scratching straw or leaves
may be placed, and into this an evening
meal of whole grain placed an hour or

WINDERxSHOW.
WINDER. GA., Dec. 9.—The second
annual show of the Winder Poultry as
sociation will be held here December
11-13. The association is already mak
ing great preparations, and expects to
have one of the best shows ever held in

premiums in cash and in cups. About
S2OO will be awarded this way. The
Rhode Island Club of Georgia will give
a cup, to be competed for by this breed
of chickens, valued at SSO. In addition
to these prizes, first, second and third
ribbons will be given on the poultry
representing each breed. About 250
birds were shown at the show'last yeat .
At this show the association expects
to have about three times as many.
In connection with the show a ladies
fair will be held that promises to be
Interesting. All kinds of canned fruits,
jellies, preserves, fancy work, embroid
ery, pot flowers, etc., will be shown at
this fair.

thing to get presents for our friends that
will please them. We know of nothing
that would give more pleasure or please
