T.R. REPEATS CRY
Os “THEFT" TO
NIOOSERS
Defeated Candidate Appeals to
Progressive Partyites to
Keep Up Fight.
CHICAGO. Dec. 10. -Colonel Theo
dore RoCsevelt .-oumh-i] the war cry of
’ the Progressive party in a speech be
fore tin Hull Moose conference here to
day. By reiterating the charge of
“theft,*’ which he has hurled at the Re
publican party since th' Chicago con
vention, hi shoWi d that h s polii A aS
leader of tile Progressive part' would
be that of “no compromise.”
of the theft he said:
"Some day the honest men and wom
en wim make up the rank and fib of
Ate Republican party ' ill realize tin
full Iniquity of which tin m< n were
guilty, who in the Republican eonv< n
tion of last June, by deliberate politi
cal theft, wrenched the control of the
party from the people, made it the par
ty of reaction and gave it into the ab
solute control of tlie bosses.
“Tn.-e men preferred to see th.- par
ty destroyed rather than see it made
more what it was in the days of Lin
coln. Their purpose wa , at ail costs,
to p rpetuate the rule of privilege
poli t leal-film m ial wit bin tin party.
“The men who took part in. profited
by or condoned am! indorsed the theft
of tin Chicago convention should never
again be trusted by men who believe in
honesty. Their action differed from the
ordinary crime of the ordinary ballot
box stuff< r or crooked election official*
only as the action of a great corrupt
fiancie who swindles on a gigantic
scale, just within the law. differs from
the clime of the poor wretch who steals
because he is in want.” *
1 Thrust at Root.
Without mentioning the name of llli
hu Root, Colonel Roosevelt paid his in
spects to the corporation lawyer in this
manner:
“The theft of the Chicago convent inn
can, be defended only by the type of
corporation lawyer whose business it is
to advise big financiers how to violate
the law in wholesale fashion with im
punity. These big politicians, finan
ciers and corporation lawyer.-, and their
hangers-on. such as the college presi
dents of the ‘llttle-brother-to-the-rich’
type, asserted and perhaps believed that
they were acting in the interest of the
conservative They most urgently
pleaded that sitting on the safety valve
Is not the right way to pi event revolu
tions.”
Discussing his demand that “the peo
pie shall rule.” the colonel said:
•■I believe that political parties shou! 1
be controlled by and be paid for, as fal
as possible, by the actual men am!
women who vote at elections: in other
words, by the people. I do not insist
tipon any absolute equality in cam
paign gifts, and 1 am willing that the
party should take the large campaign
contribution if honestly offered, with
out condition or reservation, on exactly
the same terms and in exactly the sum .■
spirit as the small contribution."
1.000 Hear Speech.
Fully 1,000 persons wire in the ban
quet room of the LaSalle when ’.he
colonel began to speak. Os these near
ly 700 were from outside of Chicago.
The managers of tonight’s banquet
have been besieged for places at the
tables. More than 3,000 applications
for the 1.500 places have been received.
A number of women were among
those who attended the sessions today.

Miss Reine Davies, prima donna of “Madame Sherry” and noted vaudeville star.
Reine Davies, Prima Donna,
Declares All Women Should
Have a Diverting Hobby.
Centering her all in her profession is
not the right road to success, accord
ing to Miss Reine Davies, who opened a
week’s engagement- in "Madame Sherry"
at the Lyric theater last night. To at
tain her greatest success, a profession
al woman should havajnterests entire
ly foreign to her calling, stie maintains
in this way and in this way alone can
the woman learn to love her work.
Miss Davies is a. living example of
her theory. She practices what she
preaches In private life, she is Mrs.
George Lederer As wife of this prom
inent and wealthy theatrical manager,
there naturally is no necessity for her
to work for a livelihood. She works
because she loves her profession.
Hut she does not allow her entire in
terest to rest in her home life and her
stage work. Miss Davies is an ardent
advocate of outdoor life. She is famous
as a horsewoman and riding is her prin
cipal diversion.
At the recent Xew York horse show
she was awarded twelve blue ribbons in
some of the most closely contested
classes.
Os course she knows that beauty is a
stage asset. She knows, too, that a
healthy outdoor life is an aid to beauty,
but it is not for this that she practices
