Sir Thomas to
Atlanta
Sir Thomas Upton is receiving a cor
dial welcome in Atlanta, several bril
liant affairs having been planned for
the short time he is in the city. Colo
nel Willis Ragan gives the largest of
these affairs, a reception for 300 guests,
from 4 to 6 o'clock this afternoon at
the Capital City club, the host being as
sisted in receiving by Mr. and Mrs.
John Marshall Slaton. Mr and Mrs.
John W. Grant. Mr. and Mrs. James R.
Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Keats Speed, Mr.
and Mrs. Clark Howell Judge and Mrs.
William T. Newman, Judge and Mrs.
Don Pardee, Mr. and Mrs, Robert Pos
ter Maddox. .Mr. and Mrs. John S. Co

The receiving party stood before a
hank of palms. Smilax formed a mural
decoration, and palms were grouped 1n
\the corners of the room, vases of pink
roses being placed on pedestals through-

A group of charming girls, including
Misses Katherine Ellis, Harriet Cal
houn. Marjorie Brown, Sarah Rawson.
Kathryn Gordon, Annie Lee McKenzie,
Maty Helen Moody, Anne Orme and
Martha Phinizy, of Athens, presided
the tea. table in the reception room.
This evening the distinguished visi
tor will be honor guest at a dinner
pally which Mr. and Mrs. Platon give,
covers to be laid for twelve, at a table
elaborately decorated In American
Beauty roses and lilies of the valley.
The dinner party at which Colonel
Ragan will entertain tomorrow in honor
of Sir Thomas will assemble 20 guests.
The dinner will be given at Colonel
Ragan's home on Peachtree street, and
the guests will Include Mrs. Albert E.
Thornton. Misses Anne Orme, Harriet
Calhoun. Martha Phinizy, Katherine El
lis. Margaret Hawkins, Marjorie Brown,
Passfe May Ottley, Esther Smith, Helen
Payne, Colonel Neill, of London, and
Messrs. Joseph Brown Connally. Marlon
Smith, Henry Newman. Walter T. Col
quitt, W. F. Newman, James Ragan and
Ralph Ragan.
On Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs.
Grant give a buffet supper, In honor ot
Sir Thomas Upton.
Holiday Tea.
A wealth of red berried holly formed
the decorations at the home of Mrs. A.
W. Falkinburg in West End yesterday
afternoon, when Mrs. Falkinburg and
Mrs. Joseph Lucius Singer entertained
at tea. Christmas bells and wreaths
added to the decorations and the tea
table had for a centerpiece a cut glass
vase of red roses, with all minor details
in red and green. ,
Mrs. I<eon Singer, Mrs. DuPont .Mc-
Phail and Mrs. Furlong presided over
the tea table. Little Margaret Thorn
ten, who received the cards of the call
ers, wore white lingerie with red rib
bons. Pretty toilets were worn by the
hostesses and members of the receiving
party, who ' were Mesdames Thomas
Body, C. P. Stough. Jerome Jones and
H. E. Holbrook, and Misses Louisa
Johnson, Ethleen Stewart, Louise
Loomis and Ruth Cox.
For Miss Spalding.
Sixteen young girls were guests of
Miss Elizabeth Spalding, the young
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Spald
ing, at a bridge part.v this afternoon.

Driving club and the tables were placed
in the New York room. The score
cards were hand painted In girls’ heads,
and the prizes included a dainty bou
, dolr cap for top score, and a picture for
second prize. A souvenir for each guest
there was a French nosegay. Dainty
refreshments were served on the card
tables at the close of the game.
Miss Spalding’s aunt. Mrs. Clarence
May. chaperoned the guests, who were

Grace Bloodworth, Carrie Blount. Hazel’
