UNIONS OPPOSE
BIBLE IN SCHOOLS
Labor Congress Blocks Move to
Add Teaching of Scripture
to Curriculum.
The Southeastern Labor eongresslu.
gone on record as opposed to the mov
ment to teach the Bible in the
schools. “ llc
A recommendation to make Bib;
study part of the school curiieul lln , ,l i ’’
eluded in the educational
report met with a storm of protest fr ;
many of the unionists yesterday
noon. The proposition was vote,] j,Y
after long and bitter debate.
Two Atlanta labor leaders, J
Woodall and R. H. Harrison/were re’
sponsible for the recommendation ,/
defended it vigorously.
Urges Study of Bible.
“There are too many dust-covered
Bibles in this country,” declared Wood
all. "The little attention paid to Biblj
study is responsible for the gro-.(i M
Infidelity and wickedness in this coun I
try. The Bible should be a part of the
course In every public school."
J. C. Shaughnessy, of St. Louis or .
ganlzer for the National Barbers union '
took up the opposition at once.
"There are portions of the Bible' hs
said, "that are unfit to be sent through
the malls, let alone be taught in th»
schools. It is absurd to suggest that '
it should be taught in the schools,
the parents of many school children I
make no pretense of being Christians
It is welding the church with the state' j
an idea foreign to the American s,- 5 l ’
tern of government.”
Sees Religious Dictation.
“Why, there are hundreds of ehll.
dren sending their children to the pub.
llc schools who do not believe in the i
Bible, said P. J. Conlon, vice president
of the International Association of Ma.
chinlsts, of Washington, be ve .
in the Talmud, others in the Koran,
others in nothing except the spirit of
human kindness. Why should the pub.
lie school system dictate the religion of
their school children?”
Others were milder in their oppusi.
tlon to the idea, but none the less firm. I
Among those who went on reco'd as
opposed to teaching the Bible in the '
schools, basing their objections on a
plea for less sectarianism and abso- 1
lute religious freedom for every , ne,
