f-DITtD JUD® T. J. MARSHALL Poultry Missionary Wort \\'. have never seen a more striking illustration of what good J profitable work a wide-awake poultry man can do in a communitv .ij.p wo saw last week up in a country town in 'l’ennessee. It is off the main line of the railroad in , of the poorest farming communities in mid dle T nnessee. Two years ago you could hardly lind a chicken that looked better than a scrub in all that county. At that time a new station agent was placed at that town and he chanced to be a poultry crank and he brought his layout of Rhode Island Reds and black Minorcas with him and commenced forthwith to build poultry coops, houses, etc., all tlii' while talking good chickens to every farmer, ,t„ keeper or what not whoever happened to ,-oiiie in contact with him. He made fun of their old dunghills; and told tluin that as good a class of people as they were should be ashamed to own such stock. They had good cattle and horses, and why not good chick- ens" Some got mad at him and found fault with him for a while, but soon got over itan d came to him for advice. He advised them on every hand; sold them stock and helped them to buy other kinds of chickens from other farmers, se lected for them, and, in fact, push ed and pulled until he had almost all the community worked up over the chicken business. This fall he organized a poultry as sociation and held a show. He was president, superintendent and, in fact, the whole push himself. You should have seen the chickens pour into that town for the show—something like 400 In all and some of them as fine as ever seen In a show anywhere. Nine-tenths of them were grown on the farms with an enthusiastic set of chicken farmers for owners, and it would have’ done your heart good to have heard them talk of their success in the past and their prospects for the future. At another town we talked to a very Rhode Island Reds. FOR SALE—Twelve thoroughbred S. R. I. Red hens and pullets, one cock; Cherokee strain; deep color. Only *1 each. G. F. Biel .man Ga. 47-20-11 j O' successful poultry farmer, one who had oeen in the business for a number of years, and he said the secret of his success at home was that he made it his business to get in touch witli the farmers about him and let them know what he was doing and the value of good stock over the scrub. He went further. He would often give cock erels (not ms best) to those whom he desired to get interested, to cross on their common stock, knowing that in nine times out of ten by doing so lie would get them interested enough in a year or two to buy a lot of breeders from him, discarding their others. H« said such a course rarely fails to bring results. True, there are those about us why are so deaf to the advantages of good stock that are sung around them they go grinding along in the same old rut from year to year, deriving no advantages from their neighbors' ex periences.
