117// Poultry Pay on the Farm?
This question is asked again and again. It can be answered by
one word : Yes. Poultry does pay on the. farm or anywhere else when
well managed. What we mean by ‘‘well man- I ,'7 r ti~y :
aged" is the providing of good comfortable roost- L
ing houses for them during the winter months and
' supplying them with a sufficiency of good whole- ||
some food in proper quantities at proper times,
> sufficient to insure rapid growth of young stock
and to stimulate egg production in the hens. At
1 least the same degree of cleanliness should be giv
’ en the poultry quarters that is given to the horses
i or mules on a well-kept farm. ' W-
The first and most important consideration \ GS
for us to notice is that when little or nothing is
given, but little should be expected in return. If
we furnish a fowl with but a weakly, frail body by
breeding a degraded, run-down stock of poultry
and expect it to gather its living from the big
road and come marching home with a plump, fine
developed body, we shall more than likely be
disappointed. KJ
There is no doubt that poultry is the most neglected of all farm
.stock and has been for generations past. It is so easy to adopt, the
old plan of our grandfathers that
any old place is good enough for
the. chickens, and it has been re
markably well adopted, the excep
tions being some kind-hearted
owners who prefer to build com
fortable quarters to accommodate
the broods
The chances are that tills same man
knows enough about chickens to breed
good ones, even if hie old-time neigh
bors do put him down as a -spendthrift
or a lunatic, consequently unworthy of
attention.
But times are changing on the old
farm. Our farmers' wives are reading
farm and poultry papers when they can
get their husbands to take them, ami
they are telling them about how well
poultry pays when properly cared for.
Changes are being wrought each year
on more than one farm in the manage
ment of hens.
It has been fully proven beyond a
doubt that poultry well cared for in a
systematic manner will pay hand-

somely for the care and feed bestowed

on the investment besides; in fact,
there is no other branch on the farm

, We could refer to numerous Instances
where practical tests have been made
by persons who bought all their feed

I with a good stock of chickens they can
