IL S. Babcock, says: "1 keep fowls that are recognized as among the most useful in the list of our thoroughbreds, ami at the same time their beauty points are not lost sight of. in Hush times, when business is booming and money plentiful, both kinds of fowls sell well, the prac tical and strictly fancy breeds; when hard times come, as they do periodically, the fowls bred pri marily lor their beauty sell slowly, while those bred for their usefulness sell readily." In \ iew of this fact, is it not the part of wis dom for a young man just starling in the poultry business to begin with practical fowls and to make them his sole and his principal source of poultry incomell there is some breed of strictly fancy fowls that he feels lie can not be happy without, let him breed a few of them, ;md only a few, in addition to his regular line of practical chickens. What is the reason that practical fowls sell better in hard times than do the fancy breeds? The asking of the question is almost a sufficient answer. In hard times money can not be lavishly spent on ornamentation. It must go for the necessities. -Most of the poultry breeders are not rich but moderately well to do, and they depend upon their own labor for their support. These peo ple, knowing their slender incomes may be made more slender by the stringent times, very naturally turn to poultry keeping for a part of their support if they have spare time in which to look after poul try. They are not looking for fancy tilings, but are looking for bread winners. They want the useful fowls, the ones that will lay eggs and produce good strong bod ies in a reasonable time, and so they buy the practical fowls. If the poultry man is breeding the practical kinds he need not fear about a market, even in hard times. Indeed, I believe hard times in other branches of business tend to Rhode Island Reds. PEN (S.
