Keep the Practical Fowl
One of the best of our practical as well as theoretical breeders
and writers on poultry matters, H. S. Babcock, says: “I keep fowls
that are recognized as among the most useful in
the list of our thoroughbreds, and at the same
time their beauty points are not lost sight of. In
flush times, ■when business is booming and money
plentiful, both kinds of fowls sell well, the prac
tical ami strictly fancy breeds; when hard times
come, as they do periodically, the fowls bred pri
marily for their beauty sejl slowly, while those
bred for their usefulness sell readily.’’
In view of this tact, is it not the part of wis
dom for a young man just starting in the poultry
business to begin with practical fowls and to make
them his sole and his principal source of poultry
income? If there is some breed of strictly fancy
fowls that he feels he can not be happy without,
let him breed a few of them, and only a few, in
addition to his regular line of practical chickens.
What is the reason that practical fowls sell
better in hard times than do the fancy breeds? The
asking of the question is almost a sufficient answer.
In hard times money can not be lavishly spent on ornamentation.
It must go for the necessities. Most
of the poultry breeders are not

Mr. Janies T. McCrorey, of the Me-
Crorey Farm, Woodland, Ga,, Is in the
city attending the poultry show. The
McCrorey Farm is one of the largest
breeders of Indian Runner ducks (both
white and fawn and white) in the
Soutli today. Mr. McCrorey had his
birds in the Columbus show and took
away prizes galore. He was very sorry
he could not enter his birds in the
Southern International, but the entries
closed before he could enter. He feels
safe after taking first premium on
White Indian Runner pen at Columbus;
he could make the best of them “sit up
and take notice” if he could not take off
the “blue ribbon.”
The McCrorey birds have made a fine
showing wherever they have been
shown, and in most Instances have had
unusually strong competition.
The McCrorey Farm reports fine
