Health and Disease
1 lioiisimds oi successful and progressive poultrymen, faithfully
striving to banish the conditions which produce disease, are living
examples of how poultry should be kept. Fowls in
their natural and wild state seldom have disease, /
principally because the conditions are what they ■
should he. Fowls kept in confinement, with no
possible means to escape existing conditions, are 1
subject to about as many diseases as their keepers,
and that means legion, it seems. The great harvest 4J
of death among the feathered tribes, due to the
sms of omission and commission, is too large Io
estimate. As some one has remarked. “Stop sin
iiiug ami attend to business.’' ft applies admir- ;« Jf,
ably in this case.
The secret of most sickness has been diseov
cred. Disease is due to germs of a certain kind
which develop and sproul as it were when the eon
ditions of tilth, or rather filth, is just right.
The blood and tissues of the fowl are the gardens
of germs. You may have read about them as RJ MXE'SHax-i_.
microbes bacteria, ferments, etc. We are told
that there are germs of health, or. rather, germs abounding in a
healthy organism, capable of destroying almost any antagonists or
disease germs that may appear. It
is essential that the average man
should know that stagnant pools,
i garbage heaps, impure air, damp
! houses and coops are all favorable
breeding places for the disease
germs and hostile to the health of
poultry.
The matter resolves itself into the
question whether the poultryman shall
look well to all of the sanitary condi
tions surrounding his poultry and in
thus doing prevent nine-tenths of the
disease that might appear in the flock
or neglect all matters and attempt to
doctor the sick and run the risk of
losing a large per cent.
Preventive measures not only include
sanitary measures, but the starting
with healthy stock, and if any new
ones are to be purchased, the re
plenishing of tlie flock only after the
strangers nave neon kept in quarantine

THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS
until j’ou are satisfied that they have
, no contagious disease.
! The same course should be followed
in handling your own stock. If a sick
’ bird appears, take It away from the
rest of the flock to treat it. if you feel
. disposed to doctor it. Do not put it
back until the traces of disease are
entirely banished. If it Is badly af
fected, the safest method is to use the
hatchet and bury deep.
Too close confinement In small
houses not admitting sufficient air is
a common cause of disease. Let every
thing be airy and full of sunshine if
possible. A simple way to test the air
of a closed hen house is to placti a
lighted lamp in it; if the flame burns
clearly and brightly the air is pure
enough at that time for the fowls.
If it burns dimly and feebly, there
is y lack of oxygen in the air and more
ventilation is needed. This is more es
pecially a test for closed houses at
night in cold weather, of course.
