Rhode Island Reds
\ number of correspondents are asking Hie question, ‘‘What
are Rhode Island Reds anyway ” 'l ii brei'd takes its name from
the state in which it firs! made its appearance,
and in which if is supposed to have orijrinated.
It has been bred anil raised for a good m.u;.
.years in the states of Rhode Island. Connecti
cut and Massachusetts, almost entire].! as a
farm and market chicken, so we hav>’ ii from
those who were on the ground during tiie in
ception. It is a crosx of the Malay or Asiatic
game on the common mixed stock of the com
munity which was alreadi composed of a mix
tiire ot Bmf ('ochins. Brown L'gimrns ,i,id na
five stock.
Ihe Asiatic (Jane s wi re brought in Ia cap
tains of sailing vessels and traded to the coast
inhabitants.
Ih.e combination or cross proved valuable as
layers for the table, and al the saim- time be
came noted for vigor and stamina, so that the
farmers cared for little else, and clung to them
for years, each year selecting the brightest colored males they
had for breeding purposes until thei saw that they had almost
established a strain. 1
Finally the fowls were taken to
one of the fairs in that section
by one of the thrifty poultrx
men. and when asked by the
judge what he had there, he re
plied. “Those are some of our
common Rhode Island Reds.”
With that as a starter they were
henceforth known by this name.
This was a. hint to the seeker of new
breeds and it was not long; till they
were scattered about tlie country as
Rhode Island Reds, but. of course, in a
very crude state. They have now been
in the hands of scientific breeders so:
some eight or ten years and are show- ,
ing up their good points to the world.
For quick growth and vigor they will
perhaps excel anything in our standard
line today, and as egg producers ar<
perhaps the equal of any. There are
two varieties of this breed, the single
and rose comb. The single, however. Is
in much greater prominence than the
rose comb variety.
Aside from the character of the combs
they should be the same. I can not

•give you The Standard dt scription here,
but will give an idi.i of size and color.
Tin male, when fullj matured, should
be a brilliant, g:os > da. k rod through
out, wit Ii the exec; lieu of a black tail
and about one-lmif of tiicli wing feath
er black. Tii<' color might be better
understood as h rod mahogany. The
female should be red throughout ex
cept the black tail ami wing, as de
scribed for the male with a slight black
ticking' on the lower part of the neck.
Os course, you will not find the luster
on the female that you will on the male.
Otherwise the color might be known as
mahogany red.
In shape they should be long in body
and back, but with a nice slight con
cave sw- ■ p to mil in contra-distinction
to the Alino'.ca, which also has a long
back, bnl the rear of the Minorca back
is carried much lower than that of the
Reds and lias no upward sweep to the
tali. In size the Red is the same as the
Wyandotte, except the pullet, which is
on>-iiulf pound less. The cock weighs
eight and one-half pounds, hen six and
om -half, cockerels seven and one-half,
pullet five pounds.
Like all comparatively new breeds,
one must not expect too much of it.
There will be many off-colored chicks
come from the very best obtainable
strains. This is something that we all
have tc l eai until they have been care
fully bred for a good long period of
years.
