• Hens and Hens
What a tlifit-rcni’e in children, in the same family. Yes. and
what a difference in In ns. One lien will lay every day in lhe week
tor weeks at a time amt never think of becoming z , jty;
broody or wanting to sit . A -ister of hers will
lay about every third day until she lays about
fifteen eggs ami then go lo sitting, regardless of
the time of year, winter or summer. One hen
will lay a large smooth egg ev<-ry lime; all so
much alike that you can tell her egg wherever you
find il. Her mate will lay a round egg one time
ami a long one the next, a large one and then a
small one.
One lien will lay a law uniform lot of > ggs
up to the very last one she drops, while another
h>’ii will diminish the size of the ejfgs as the time
passes until the last one of the litter will scarce
be larger than a pigeon’s egg. Some hens will
lay right through their moult, scarcely taking a
week’s rest for that trying time. Others will
lay straight through the winter months regard
less ol the house conditions in which they are
but many others will not lay in winter no matter
whal the surroundings arc—warm feed, cold feed, meat, or what not.
Sonic hens prefer corn to any
other feed, and lay well upon sucli
feed; others prefer oats or rye;
others will not eat oats at all, if
they can get anything else to eat.
Stick a pin there.
Provide ■> variety for your lens and
then they may make their own sel< > -
tions, getting what is best suited to
their requirements.
Some hens will lav large heavy
shelled eggs at all times, regardless of
whether they get much oyster shell or
lime. Others will persist in laying a
small ill-shaped, thin shelled egg when
fully supplied with shell-forming mate
rial. Some hens win eat everything in
sight and stand around for more, al
ways as fat as butter, and will lay al
most all the time. Other hens are more
active, smaller eaters and insist upon
hustling about for what they get. They
are never fat. but are Just as good lay
ers.
Some hens must find a ver.t secluded
spot or dark place for their nest and
will insist upon laying iti a nest to
themselves, while other hens will lay
out in the yard and drop their eggs
anywhere, seemingly the more public
the place the better they like it.
We can gather mant valuable point
ers from watching our hens and their
various peeullarifles. One point is that
we should cater to these peculiarities
whenever they are conducive to health
and egg production. regardless of
whether they are Just our exact id£as
of the proper thing or not. When we
find the lien determined to lay, regard
less of conditions, with the weather
cold or hot, be sure to keep that hen
another year. Set all Iter eggs, mark
the chickens, so you can keep them also.
Keep the hen that does not stop laying
to moult. While it might be said to be
advisable for a hen to rest at that time,
most of our liens spend too much tlnio
over the matter For that reason it
might be a good idea to retain some of
those laying-through-moult hens.
Strive to perpetuate the good quali
ties of hens that lay good sized > ggs
and regular in size, neither round nor
sharp pointed, but a. good oval. The
attractive hen among the good layers

is to be admired and valued, for she

is less liable to dis ‘use. It is a good
plan to study your hens at. odd times
when you have a moment’s leisure.
Ymi will learn many things about them
that will mean dollars and cents to you.
INDIGESTION.
Judg, F. ,1. Marshall: Can you tell
me what is the matter with my chick
ens? I have lost three with the 'same
trouble. They do not seem to want to
eat. Crop is packed full. They stalk
about witli head anti tail down and
still theit emnbs seem to stay red until
nearly the last. They get boiled oats
twice a day and a mash of cornmeal,
ground oats and wheat bran three
times a week. I thought 1 was taking
good rare of them. MRS. C. S. C.
Oeala. Fla.
REPLY.—Your fowls seem to
have impact crop and gastritis or
indigestion. Those that are badly
affeetediand weak. 1 would suggest,
chop their heads off and bury them.
Those but slightly sick. I think, will
get all right by changing the diet.
You are feeding too much soft food,
which is so conducive to indiges
tion. 1 would give but one mash
feed a day and the balance of the
ration should be mixed; cracked
grain fed in litter would be all the
better. In fact, I think it would
be better to keep a box of dry
wheat bran in reach and do away
with the mash altogether until your
Hock gets entirely over its present
trouble, ami feed lightly of the dry
grain. Give plenty of green stuff,
such as turnip tops, sugar beets or
sprouted oats. Keep a good sup
ply of sharp grit always before
them. A chicken’s gizzard is in
tended for active work in grinding
the seeds and grains it finds in its
> natural state, and when fed for
months upon soft ground food,
needing but little, if any, grinding,
the gizzard becomes inactive and,
failing to take the food properly
: from the crop, it becomes packed
and trouble follows. Keep your
hens as close to nature as you can
and you will have but little trouble.
