MARSHALL. « Hens and Hens What a difference in children in the same family. Yes, and | what a difference in hens. One hen will lay every day in the week! for weeks at a time ami never think of becoming broody or wanting to sit . A sister of hers will lay about every third day until she lays about fifteen eggs and then go to sitting, regardless of the time oi year, winter or summer. One hen will lay a large smooth egg every time, all so much alike that you can tell her egg wherever you find it. Iler mate will lay a round egg one time and a long one the next, a large one and then a small one. One lien will lay a large uniform lot of eggs up to the very last one she drops, while another hen will diminish the size of the eggs as the time passes until the last one of the litter will scarce be larger than a pigeon’s egg. Some hens will lay right through their moult, scarcely taking a week’s rest for that trying time. Others will lay straight through the winter months regard less of the house conditions in which they are but many others will not lay in winter no matter what the surroundings are—warm feed, cold feed, Some hens prefer corn to any other feed, and lay well upon such feed; others prefer oats or rye; , others will not eat oats at all’ if ! they can get anything else to eat. Stick a pin there. Provide a variety for your hens and then they may make their own selec tions, netting what Is best suited to their requirements. Some hens will lay largo heavy shelled eggs at all times, regardless of ' whether they get much oyster shell or lime. Others will persist in laying a small ill-shaped, thin shelled egg when fully supplied with shell-forming mate- ' rial. Some hens will eat everything in slgiit and stand around for more, al ways as fat as butter, and will lay al most ail the time. Other hens are more active, smaller eaters and insist upon hustling about for what they get. They a- .- never fat, but are just as good lay ers. Some liens must tlnd a very secluded spot or dark place for their nest and will insist upon laying tn a nest to themselves, while other hens will lay out In the yard and drop their eggs anywhere, seemingly the more public the place the better they like it. We can gather many' valuable point ers from watching our hens and their various peculiarities. One point Is that we should eater to these peculiarities whenever they tire conducive to health and egg production, regardless of whether they are just our exact Ideas lof the proper thing or not. When we tlnd the hen determined to lay, regard less of conditions, with the' weather cold or hot, be sure to keep that hen another year. Set all her eggs, mark tile chickens, so you can keep them also. Keep the hen that does not stop laying to moult. While it might be said to In advisable for a hen to rest at that time, most of our hens spend too rnucli time over the matter. For that reason it might be a good idea to retain some of those laying-through-moult hens. Strive to perpetuate the good quali ties of liens that lay good sized eggs and regular In size, neither round nor sharp pointed, but a good ovai. The attractive lien among the good layers Orpingtons. It is a good plan to study your hens at odd times when you have a moment's leisure. You will learn many things about them that will mean dollars and cents to you. INDIGESTION. Judge F. J. Marshall: Can you tell me what is the matter with my chick ens? I have lost three with the same trouble. They do not seem to want to eat. Crop is packed full. They stalk about with head and tail down and still their combs seem to stay red until nearly the last. They get boiled oats twice a daj' and a mash of cornmeal, ground oats and wheat bran three times a week. I thought I was taking good care of them. MRS. C. S. C. Ocala, l-'ln. REPLY.—Your fowls seem to have impact crop and gastritis or indigestion. Those that are badly affected and weak, I would suggest, chop their heads off and bury them. Those but slightly sick, I think, will get al) right by changing the diet. You are feeding too much soft food, which Is so conducive to indiges tion. I would give but one mash feed a day and the balance of the ration should be mixed; cracked grain fed in litter would be all the better. In fact, I think it would be better to keep a box of dry wheat bran in reach and do away with the mash altogether until your Hock gets entirely over its present trouble, and feed lightly of the dry grail* GiVe plenty of green stuff, such as turnip tops, sugar beets or sprouted oats. Keep a good sup plj- of sharp grit always before them. A chicken's gizzard is in tended for active work in grinding the seeds and grains it finds In its natural state, and when fed for months upon soft ground food needing but little, if any, grinding, the gizzard becomes inactive and. failing to take the food properly from the crop, it becomes packed and trouble follows. Keep your hens as close to nature as you can and you will have but little trouble. Poultry Farm For Sale. FOR SALE My home, a poultry and truck farm, about 10 acres, In Fitzger ald, Ga.
