Egg-Laying Contest
English Pen Leads by Good Margin.
Contest Will Be of Great
Benefit.

- This :.i\ ng contest, which started
i last November, is getting to be more

There ;i: »• in competition 60 pens <«f

L They < a:nc from all over this country,
I Canada and England. An English pen
. of Single Comb White Leghorns ha\»*
i been in the lead for total number of
: egg« laid ever .wince the end of th<
* first month. True, there have been
' pens ahead of them for a single
. month s >♦ < «»rd. but not enough ahead
. of them to bring Hie tfltal above this
i pen. It is. therefore, the opinion of
the direi tor in charge that the Eng
lish people have been paying mor*-
particular attention to the subjec t o7
egg production than have we in this
country. It is. therefore, believed that
such c ontests as the one now in prog
ress will do a world of good toward
J stimulating the breeding specially for
eggs.
True, there is a whole lot in the
■ <vay the fowi« ale fed and managed
whether they lav well or not. but we
' believe then- is more in the way oar
stock has been bred than any on»*
i thinks.

they do of the milk. They have eat n
i but little of anything else than ‘ne
feeds mentioned above. They have
eaten more than twice as much
cracked corn as whole corn. The
hens in this pen do not seem to he
any falter than the hens in any of
the other pens where the feed is por
tioned out to them They ate just In
good laying condition.
Canadian Method of Feeding.
The Canadian method of feeding
has been one of the best and most
satisfactory, and the hens ate making
a good record on it. In winter the
grain mixture is composed us two
thirds corn and one-third wheat,
thrown into the straw litter: in sum
mer just the reverse—two-thirds
wheat and one-third corn; spring and
fall, they are given in equal parts.
About a pint to ten hens is fed in
the morning and a little bit more a:
night. Rolled oats are fed from a
hopper. The hens are also supplied
with the necessary grit, charcoal, etc.,
and some wholesome 1 green stuff.
They are given nothing to drink ex
cept the buttermilk. It is our opinion
that makes on* of the best rations
which can be arranged for the farm
ers’ use. and is about as simple as it
can be made and still get the best
results. The director emphasizes th*
importance of good, clean, wholesome
feed for the young and growing
chicks.
After chicks are six weeks old thev
should be fed a scratch feed of
cracked coin and cracked wheat, ia
equal parts. If they are on a free
range, this is fed in a hopper; if < »n
--fined to yards, it should be fed in i
clean litter to induce exercise. When
fed in the litter it should be sifted tu
prevent waste of the fine stuff.
A hopper should contain the fol
lowing dry mash: Eight parts bran,
four parts cornmeal, four parts mid
dlings. two parts fine meatscrap. »ne
of tine charcoal. Asa parting remind
er. the director insists that eternal
vigilance is the price of success in he
poultry business.
These experiments are cafried on
by Mr. Quisenberry. one of the must
conscientious men the writer has ever
known, and we feel that they a
absolutely correct in his judgment,
and if the average farmer will study
these conditions with a view to b -
tering bis poultry conditions he will
surely be benefited.
