Chicks hatched under a hen should
not be taken from the hen until all
are well dried off and thoroughly ac
live. The same Is true with ineuba
tor chicks, wbleh should be left in
the machine at least from the time
the first ones are hatched.
The brooder should be in good run
ning order and well heated before any
chicks ate intrusted to its care,
Warmth Is the first essential to the
well-being of the young chick, and
you want to run no risk in that par
ticular. Be sure your brooder will
run and continue to run night and
day before intrusting a valuable lot
of youngsters to its .care.
Very young chicks that become
thoroughly chilled will never amount
to much. They may seem to revive
and get all right, but a week or ten
days will tell a different story when
bowel trouble sets in and they begin
to drop out by twos, threes and up to
a dozen in a night, according to the
size of the brood, and nothing on
earth will save many of them. An
overheating will result in very much
the same way. For that reason brood
ers should he so arranged that under
the hover a good degree of warmth Is
maintained at all times ami another
compartment of easy access several
degrees cooler than the chicks will
have it at will. About 96 degrees un
der the hover is about the right
warmth for chicks the first week,
which should be reduced slightly as
time passes and the chicks increase in
size. Always supply sufficient ventl-

lation when chicks are confined to
the brooder, which means the first
eight or fen days, according to the
season of the year and the weather.
Keep Brood in Coop.
The hen and her young brood
should be cooped for the first few
days to prevent the mother from
dragging her young ones about when
it is too cold for them and they need
hovering. After tlie second day they
can by allowed their freedom from
the coop, with the hen still confine d.
The first two weeks of the chick's
life is the most important two weeks
of his existence, so far as health goes.
1 might reiterate the old demand of
fresh water at all times, but 1 would
like to add: Giv< in a fountain so
that they may not get into it and
get wet and cold. A tomato can in
verted in a saucer or other shallow
vessel, ill ter having been filled with
water, makes a good watering foun
tain. Punch a hole, I should have
aid, so that it will come just below
the top* of your saucer or pan, to
let the water out. He sure your can
has no other hole in it which would
let the water all run out at one time.
Questions and Answers.
Judge .Marshall: I have a White
Orpington pullet or two 'with heads
almost entirely bare and perfectly
smooth. I have not noticed any oi
the hens pulling feathers and am at
a loss to know what the trouble is.
If you ar give any information that
will help me to remedy this 1 shall
certainly appreciate it.
1 am, yours truly.
Rome, Ga. J. J. c.
Answer. Your chiefs are troubled
with the depluming mites which work
almost entirely .bou; the head and
occasionally at the root of the tail.
They are hard to find, but they are
there anl get in their destroying work
just the same. They are quite com
mon on growing chicks at about two
to three months c Id, and not only
make them look mighty ragged, but
retard the growth to a considerable
extent. Donkey’s head ointment will
usually clean them off. If you can
not get this make your own by tak
ing one dram of Hour or sulphur, 20
grains of potash to one ounce of vase
line or lard. Mix thoroughly and
use on the affected place, it may
take two or three applications to give
th«- desired effect.
These pe.-ts often become very
troublesome in a bunch of growing
chicks that are huddled together in
their roosting. The wise plan is to
begin work upon them as soon as
they are first noticed at work, then
they can be stamped out before they
do much damage.
